About the summer school
COST Action IS1402 ‘Ageism - a multi-national, interdisciplinary perspective’ aims to enhance scientific knowledge and attention to ageism, by bringing together and integrating the different disciplines of research, by developing national, multi-national and international collaborations with public policy officials, non-academic professionals, civil society NGOs and older persons, and by fostering a new generation of researchers. In order to meet these aims, the COST Action will organise Training Schools (TS) throughout the duration of the Action.
We are happy to announce the 2017 Training School ‘Theory and Methods in Research on Ageism and Age-discrimination’, which will take place on May 30th to June 2nd 2017 at the
National Institute for the Study of Ageing and Later Life (NISAL), Linköping University, in Norrköping, Sweden.
The Traning school will concentrate on multifaceted theories of ageism, on related concepts and on the embeddedness into wider social theory. This will be done within the framework of the involved disciplines and with a focus on thematic areas and (multi)disciplinary focal points, on empirical operationalisation and research concepts, on research methods and the adequacy of current approaches. It will discuss research examples, qualify the need for future research and consider the issue of research funding.
The Training School will consist of three main modules:
- Defining the concept: Theories of ageism and age discrimination
- Research approaches on ageism and age discrimination
- Tools for researching ageism and age discrimination
These modules contain keynote lectures by distinguished senior speakers and workshops which will focus on discussion and participant input. All participants will be invited to provide a brief written contribution from their field of research and to present it during one of the workshops. A detailed schedule of the TS program will be sent to the successful applicants, closer to the event. Until today, confirmed trainers are:
- Fredrik Snellman, Umeå University
- Håkan Jönson, Lund University
- Eskil Wadensjö, Stockholm University
- Clary Krekula, Karlstad University
- Kasia Karpinska, Erasmus University Rotterdam
This list of experts will be extended and in total, there will be nine distinguished scholars available as trainers. Moreover, additional support and advice will be provided by the Training School hosts:
- Annika Tagizadeh Larsson, Linköping University.
- Andreas Motel-Klingebiel, Linköping University.
Trainers are international experts in their respective fields, with extensive experience of teaching and mentoring on the topics of ageing, ageism, age-discirmination and related issues.
They cover a wide range of disciplines and methodological approaches. Each trainer will provide a learning tool-kit, which will be disseminated in advance to participants, via the TS
website. At the same time, participants will be assigned tasks to conduct in preparation for the TS.
Who can apply ?
COST training schools are mainly aimed at early stage researchers (ESR) – PhD students and post-docs and junior researchers. According to a formal definition, participants funded by the COST Action should have received a PhD within the past 8 years. More senior academics, researchers and policy-makers may also apply, but priority will be given to ESR. Unfunded participation is open without restrictions (registration will be possible up to the maximum capacities of the venue) as the TS are open to the COST Action members and selected experts.
Eligible for financial support:
- Trainees from COST member countries
- Trainees from approved NNC (near neighbour countries) institutions
- Trainees from approved European RTD Organisations
Financial support for trainees
Successful applicants to the TS may be eligible to apply for financial support through the COST Action. Applicants who intend to request such financial support are invited to indicate this on their application form. The Management Committee (MC) of the Action decides the financial contribution for trainees attending a TS. Please note: although one will receive decision on being eligble for financial support beforehand, the actual funding will be reimbursed afterwards.
There are at least 40 grants available for trainees. More may be made available depending on the available ressources of the COST Action IS1402. The size of these grants can vary depending on the country of origin, although no individual grant can exceed the normal reimbursement rates of COST which are:
- The reimbursement rate per day is EUR 160 maximum;
- Up to EUR 300 may be attributed for travel expenses;
- A maximum grant of EUR 1 500 can be awarded;
- Grants for trainees can vary depending on the country of the Trainees (e.g. domestic, near or far countries)
Trainees who are self -funded are of course also welcome to apply to attend the TS.
Please note that the grant received may not cover the totality of the expenses related to your stay in Sweden. Additional funding may have to be sought from other sources.
Prior to the TS, all trainees must register on e-COST.
Language skills
Unless otherwise indicated, all the modules will be in English and the ability to speak, read and write fluently in this language is an absolute requirement for participation.

Participation in all COST Training Schools is subject to a selective application process. You are kindly invited to fill in the following application form and to provide the requested documents and arguments in favour of your application.
Selection will be based on those applications that most clearly correspond to the overall objectives of the COST Action IS1402, and to the content of this particular Training School.
