Summer School - The City and its Inhabitants, Rome, Italy

Publish Date: May 09, 2015

Deadline: May 31, 2015

Event Dates: from Jul 26, 2015 12:00 to Aug 03, 2015 12:00

This year we explore the relations between the city and its inhabitants, places and things, meaning the city like the meeting point between the material things and human behaviors.

For Aristotele, the city was above all, a way that people have found to organize themselves to achieve happiness: an immaterial definition because made up from a set of laws, customs, rules, beliefs, habits and rules. Architects in this city would not have importance because buildings and homes without inhabitants don't connote the city in any sense.

The existence of the city for Aristotele doesn't depend or, in any case, does not end in the existence of the buildings but is the combiantion of men and women who live in it. On the other hand we know which power exerts the space over our actions, as objects and clothing can influence the seduction of the imaginary. The physical space that is put between subjects and objects is a filter that can change behaviors, the city is one of these filters that acts as a scenography in constant motion on our imaginations.

To live means to build and to foster economic and social relations between work and leisure time, between men and women, between religious and temporal power, between public and private.

The dynamic city is done by an infinite functions necessarily in conflict with each other because the city is first of all an heterogenous whole of people that live together.

In our Summer School 2014 Franco Farinelli has made us think about how the city, like the culture, evolves according to a procedure whose paths are unpredictable and the results of which, being strangers, they will lead us to unexpected results.
