International Summer School 'Inequality of Educational Opportunities'

The IOE International Laboratory for Education Policy Analysis and the HSE Institute of Education invite applications for the upcoming INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL on education inequality research, which is to take place in Moscow, Russia on JULY 2–7, 2017.

By enabling vibrant opportunities to learn firsthand about frontline quantitative methodology in the subject research area, the International Summer School seeks to promote advanced, best-practice academic approaches to addressing social and educational inequality agendas.

In particular, the Summer School participants will focus on the following key issues:

  • Inequality in individual learning achievement: structure and dynamics
  • Variations in educational access across different income groups and communities
  • Resource disparity within educational systems: institutional barriers and 'ski-jumps'. Students’ educational trajectories
  • Ways to better address issues of social and educational inequality: resilience factors.

The Summer School will include lectures as well as practical sessions. The School will introduce participants to the recent topics in the research on educational inequality and offer valuable experience in data analysis and interpretation. As an outcome, the participants will make presentations of their own research on related topics. 

Barbara Schneider, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, John A. Hannah University Distinguished Professor in both the College of Education and the department of sociology at Michigan State University. She is a former president of the American Educational Research Association, member of the National Academy of Education, and fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Sociological Research Association.

Barbara has published 15 books and numerous articles. Barbara’s areas of interest are the social contexts that support adolescents’ transitions into post-secondary education and the labor market. The principal investigator on the College Ambition Program and co-principal investigator of the Michigan Consortium for Education Research, she focuses on understanding how low-income and minority schools respond internally to accountability policies designed to increase college readiness. 

Ernesto Treviño Villarreal, Professor at the Department of Education, Pontifical Catholic
University of Chile.
In 2011–2016, Ernesto served as Director of the Center for Comparative Policy Studies, University of Diego Portales, and Senior Advisor to the Latin American Laboratory for Educational Quality Assessment,UNESCO-OREALC.
During 2007–2010, he was coordinating the Second Regional Comparative Study by UNESCO-OREALC.
Ernesto's spheres of research interest are comparative studies in education, educational policy analysis and evaluation of educational achievements.

We encourage participation of scholars with various relevant backgrounds and at different career levels, including senior undergraduates, doctoral students, and institutional academics.

The Summer School’s working language is English. To apply, please submit the following credential pack in English at inequality.summerschool2017@gmail.com:

  • A CV specifying your academic and professional background, including research experience, publications, etc.
  • A cover letter supporting your interest in joining the Summer School
  • A summary of your current research project (up to 1,000 words, formatted Times New Roman 12, single line spacing, 1.25 cm left indent, 2 cm top * 2 cm bottom * 3 cm left * 1.5 cm right margin spacing).

The deadline for application is APRIL 21, 2017. The shortlisted participants will be announced by APRIL 30, 2017. Scholarships will be provided to cover participation fee and HSE Campus accommodation for applicants selected on a competitive basis. Travel expenses will be covered by the participants.
