About the summer school

Looking for a productive and fun way to spend your summer? The ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research is for you!

The ICPSR Summer Program provides basic and advanced instruction across a wide range of methodologies and techniques for research in the social, behavioral, and health sciences. Our courses emphasize the integration of methodological strategies with the theoretical and practical concerns that arise in research and teaching on substantive issues. We also provide a unique and supportive social environment that facilitates professional networking, encourages the exchange of ideas, and makes the experience of acquiring critical analytical skills enjoyable!

The 2017 ICPSR Summer Program is broken down into two formats: four-week sessions and short workshops.

Four-week Sessions. We will offer two four-week sessions in Ann Arbor, Michigan: the first session runs from June 26 to July 21, 2017; the second four-week session from July 24 to August 18, 2017. Registration in the four-week session enables you to take any of the lectures and workshops offered during that session. These courses cover introductory, intermediary, and advanced instruction in almost every area of methodology (from basic statistics to advanced Bayesian analysis and advanced multilevel modeling). The four-week sessions also come with the added bonus of exposing you to special lectures and discussions on important professional topics-- e.g., publishing in professional journals and academic presses; methodological issues in the study of race, ethnicity, and gender; securing external grants; and encouraging transparency in social science research.

Short Statistical Workshops

The 2017 Summer Program will also offer over 40 short, two- to five-day workshops in Ann Arbor, MI, as well as in numerous other locations starting in early May and running through most of August. In 2017, we are excited to offer short workshops in several new locations--York University, Ontario, Canada; University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland; and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong--as well as in our traditional external locations: Amherst, Massachusetts; Berkeley, California; Boulder, Colorado; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and Bloomington, Indiana. The 2017 Summer Program short course schedule covers a broad range of quantitative courses, including workshops on reproducing research results, machine learning, qualitative and mixed methods, the R statistical computing environment, and text analytics.

We think you will find the ICPSR Summer Program to be a tremendous experience, providing you with unparalleled methodological training and a one-of-a-kind professional learning environment.  As one of our 2016 ICPSR Summer Program participants described it: “The ICPSR Summer Program is a life-changing experience.” Come join us this summer and find that out for yourself!
