The dates for 2016 CPD Summer Institute will be from Sunday, July 10 to Friday, July 22, 2016. Applications for 2016 will be accepted from January 1, 2016 through April 1st. 

The CPD Summer Institute in Public Diplomacy is a rigorous, multi-disciplinary two-week training program designed to enhance the practice of public diplomacy. Since 2006, the CPD Summer Institute has provided participants with a critical understanding of the role of public diplomacy in the global community, and with tools for improving the impact and image of their country or organization abroad. 

Through an array of classes both theoretical (the core courses) and practical (the toolbox courses), as well as group projects, participants will:

  • Pinpoint the challenges facing contemporary public diplomacy and the range of strategies available to address them;
  • Strategically analyze the impact of public diplomacy initiatives;
  • Increase familiarity with new communication technologies, real-time analytics and digital storytelling in public diplomacy;
  • Utilize cutting-edge social science research in real-time public diplomacy practice.

Who Should Apply

The CPD Summer Institute in Public Diplomacy is geared toward mid-career professionals posted in ministries, including foreign affairs, defense and homeland security; trade and economics agencies; non-governmental organizations; international organizations;communication consultancies; private-sector companies; and others whose work would benefit from learning more about this vital field. In addition to innovative instruction, the program provides a setting for mid-career professionals to exercise their evaluation and decision-making skills in a group of their peers and to contribute their own ideas and perspectives.

Tuition

  • Single participant: $6,250 (USD)
  • Two or more participants from a single organization/country: $4,650 (USD)

Prices do not include travel, lodging or meals during the two-week program.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In order to be eligible to participate in the Institute, you must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited university and have a minimum of three to five years of experience in public diplomacy or a related field. Fluency in spoken and written English is also a necessity for the program as all participants are expected to actively take part in class discussions based on the assigned readings and their own experience.

Past participants have included individuals from the United States Department of State, United Nations, the World Bank, Korea Foundation, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, India, Israel, China, Japan, Mexico, Qatar, Tunisia, UK, United Arab Emirates, and South Africa. HOW TO APPLY

The electronic application for the Summer Institute can be found on the USC Center on Public Diplomacy website(http://uscpublicdiplomacy.org/index.php/training/application). All applications must be submitted online via this system.

Upon submission of your application, you will receive notification of receipt and a general time frame of the decision process. There is a rolling admissions process and applicants will be notified as soon as a decision is made. 

Once accepted, deadlines for submitting the non-refundable deposit and final payment of tuition and lodging will be explained in the acceptance letter. The University of Southern California requires foreign nationals to obtain a J-1 visa unless they are working in the United States under a diplomatic visa. Proof of this visa is required upon acceptance.

Please note that the visa processing time varies by country and can take up to 60 days, so if you intend to obtain a visa please plan accordingly.

Graduate students who have been admitted to the one-year Master’s program in Public Diplomacy must register for the Summer Institute by registering for course PUBD 500 through the USC Web Registration system (https://my.usc.edu/portal/

TUITION

Once accepted, applicants will be notified of the deposit and final payment deadlines. The USC Center on Public Diplomacy is only able to provide a refund (less 15% cancellation fee) with written notice and supporting documentation. There are absolutely no refunds 30 days prior to the start of the program. There are no refunds for costs associated with the J-1 visa, FedEx charges, or wire fees.

LAPTOP POLICY

All Summer Institute applicants are expected to bring a working laptop to the program. There will be assignments that require internet access and we are not able to provide laptops for students. If you do not have a laptop or smart phone, please let us know immediately.

VISAS

Who needs a visa?

Non-Americans and those without green cards who wish to participate in the Summer Institute obtain J-1 Scholar status at the University and pay for an Exchange Visitor Visa. 

What documentation is needed for the J-1 Visa application?

1. Completed DS-2019 form

2. Proof of Health Insurance which includes:
--Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident of illness
--Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000
--Medical evacuation to home country in the amount of $50,000
--A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

3. Full resume or curriculum vitae

4. Copy of photo page from passport

If accepted, it is the responsibility of the applicant to meet the visa deadlines. There are absolutely no refunds given for visa expenses (i.e.: processing, overnight shipping, etc.). Visa applications will not be submitted without the required documentation.

How do you obtain a visa?

The USC Center on Public Diplomacy will provide applicants with all necessary documents, but it is their responsibility to check details for the submission of visas at the closest U.S. embassy. The USC Center on Public Diplomacy cannot control visa processing times. Please make sure you contact the closest U.S. embassy as soon as possible after your acceptance to obtain the necessary documentation.

Please note that visa processing periods vary greatly by country, so early application to the program and early application for a visa are strongly recommended.
