Summer Institute for Research in African-American Studies: Black Activist New York, 9-14 July 2017, Columbia Unversity, USA

Publish Date: Feb 16, 2017

Deadline: May 28, 2017

July 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of Harlem’s historic “Silent Parade,” when over 10,000 Black New Yorkers marched in protest of anti-black lynching and other forms of violence. In commemoration of that event and the larger movement it represented, and in recognition of the historical trajectory from it to the current moment and movement for Black Lives, the theme for the 2017 Summer Teachers and Scholars Institute (STSI) will be

“Black Activist New York.”

This Summer Institute offers what few others are able: the opportunity to study Black Activism  through the lens of New York, and in New York.

Applications will be evaluated in two waves. Early Decision applicants (those who submit their materials on or before 2 April, 2017) will receive notification by 16 April, 2017. All other applicants must submit their materials on or before 28 May, 2017.
The fee for the 2017 STSI is $1,800.00. A 25% nonrefundable deposit due 10 business days after notification for all accepted applicants. The entire balance is due 4 weeks after notification for early decision applicants. A 25% nonrefundable deposit is due by 1 June, and the full balance by 9 June. Please note that admitted applicants cannot receive reading or other STSI materials until the full fee has been paid.
