The scholarship is valued between A$30,000 per annum for up to 3.5 years.

Eligibility:

To be considered for scholarship you must:

  1. Hold (or be currently completing) a research-inclusive Masters degree, OR hold (or be currently completing) a first class honours degree in a relevant discipline.
  2. Meet RMIT’s entry requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy.
  3. Be an Australian/New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident.

How to apply and further information.

Please send a 1 page letter of motivation with a copy of your CV to the contact for the project.

An exciting opportunity is available for an outstanding PhD candidate to work on development on new classes of anti-cancer gold drugs, and to contribute in addressing cancer, a major social and economic burden worldwide.

Despite the success of existing clinical metal compounds for the treatment of cancer, further developments in drug therapy are necessary to overcome their drawbacks, primarily their high toxicity, which causes unwanted side-effects in the human body.

This project seeks to develop a new class of anti-cancer gold drugs which are less toxic towards non-cancerous cells, thus causing few or no unwanted side-effects. Preliminary investigations for this project have demonstrated the successful preparation of the desired ligands and gold complexes. The same methodology will be applied to prepare new ligands and coordinate them to gold components.

We seek chemistry/ medicinal chemistry and organometallic chemistry graduates with a passion to learn and extend their knowledge to biology.

Project: Designing novel class of gold complexes with improved anticancer properties.

Driven by impact and ambitious to address real-world challenges, this project has been defined to bring new solutions to cancer treatment.

This multidisciplinary project brings chemistry and biology to design novel class of gold-based anticancer drugs and test their biological activities. The project has four major phases:

► Prepare different types of ligands

► Synthesize novel gold compounds containing the new synthesised ligands

► Characterize the proposed compounds

► Explore the anti-cancer properties of the new synthesised gold compounds
