Qualitative Research Methods in Health Care: a basic course

QUALUA (Qualitative Research in Health Care) of the University of Antwerp organises the 22nd edition of the Summer School on Qualitative Research Methods in Health Care.

This basic course teaches the participants in five days how to start from a research question, conducting a qualitative research and progress to writing a scientific paper in qualitative research. This international summer school takes place from 21 to 25 August 2017 at the University of Antwerp, city campus.

Content description

Experienced qualitative researchers of international repute will lead the course and share their experience. Participants are encouraged to bring their own experiences of research, including their questions, doubts and failures.

These are the lectures and workshops in brief:

  • Qualitative inquiry: a different paradigm
  • Setting up a qualitative research project + workshop
  • Reflect on own research projects in individual consultations
  • Data-collection techniques (interviews, focus group discussions and observations) + workshops
  • Analyzing qualitative data + workshop
  • Appraising the quality of a qualitative research project
  • Reporting the results from a qualitative research project
  • Qualitative data analysis using NVivo software

This year, we welcome an international guest (to be confirmed) for a lecture and workshop on meta-synthesis (to be confirmed).

Target group

The summer school is open to early career researchers, PhD-students, Master students (max 5) and professionals in a field related to health care. Experience in qualitative research is not required.

We assess your experiences with qualitative research in the application and based on this assessment, we accept maximum 36 participants in our summer school. The summer school primarily targets people with no or minimal experience in qualitative research methods.

Study credits

Successful completion of the summer school can be awarded with 3 credits according the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Credits will be awarded on the base of preparatory readings, 100 % (active) participation during the course and the successful completion of an assignment. The student needs to be able to assess the quality of a qualitative research paper using the tools that were offered in the course. The completion of the task is only mandatory for participants who want to achieve the ECTS study credits.

A certificate of attendance will be awarded to all participants at the end of the program. The certificate of completion replaces the certificate of attendance.

Social Programme

Next to the intensive courses, several fun and interesting social activities will be organised by ASU (Antwerp Summer University) in order to maximize the interaction between participants of all summer schools (including the summer school on Qualitative Research Methods). During evenings and weekends, a wide variety of events will be arranged so participants can fully enjoy their stay in Antwerp.

Participants will not only have the opportunity to get to know their fellow class-mates and staff in a more informal way, but will also be able to get in touch with peers attending other summer schools at the Antwerp Summer University. Some examples of these activities are a visit to the beautiful city hall, a reception, a guided city walk, a quiz, a football game or a day-trip to another Belgian city such as Bruges or Brussels.

ASU offers a wide variety of social activities in which you are free to participate. When you enrol in the summer school on Qualitative Research Methods, the enrolment fee includes a visit to the Antwerp city hall (on Wednesday 23 August) and the social diner (on Thursday 24 August). Confirmation of your attendance is required for these two activities.
