Postdoctoral Researcher Position – Synthesis and Development of Porous Inorganic Carbonates for Environmental and Bio-applications, Sweden

Publish Date: Jul 14, 2016

Deadline: Aug 15, 2016

About the university

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion.

Temporary employment full time for one year with an option to extend for a further one year; access in autumn 2016.

Duties

In 2013, the Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials developed a new type of mesoporous magnesium carbonate, known as Upsalite. Upsalite has received considerable media attention due to its unique properties including high porosity and high moisture uptake. The synthesis of Upsalite does not require the use of surfactants which makes it an interesting low-cost material for a variety of applications, such as heavy metal remove from waste water and drug delivery, etc.

We are now strengthening the research team behind Upsalite and we are looking for a highly motivated individual to join a team of researchers in carrying out top level materials development research. The post holder will contribute and lead research in the synthesis of inorganic carbonates, surface modification as well as application of porous materials (such as drug delivery and waste water treatment). Main responsibilities are to carry out and communicate top level scientific research, joint-supervision of Masters and PhD students, coordinate with external researchers and industrial partners.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a PhD degree or equivalent in chemical engineering, applied physics, materials science or similar disciplines. The candidate should have a background in the sol-gel synthesis and is competent in characterization of porous inorganic materials using various techniques such as XRD, TGA, vibrational spectroscopy (IR/Raman), electron microscopy and gas adsorption. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English is required for the position. Knowledge and experience on working with calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate is desirable. Good organisational, pedagogical and interpersonal skills are also essential for this role as there will be a substantial amount of external collaboration with researchers in multiple countries (including Sweden, China and UK).

How to apply

The application should include a personal statement where the applicant presents a biography, relevant qualifications and research interests. The application should contain a CV, copies of relevant certificates, a list of publications and other relevant documents (e.g. a list of reference persons).

Uppsala University aims for gender balance and diversity in all activities in order to achieve a higher quality at all levels of the organization. We therefore welcome applicants of any gender and with different birth background, functionality and life experience.

You are welcome to submit your application no later than August 15th, 2016, UFV-PA 2016/2253.

We decline offers of recruitment and advertising help. We only accept the application the way described in the advertisement.
