About the program
The research project, directed by Prof. Silvana Mandolessi, aims at analyzing digital media and transnational memory from an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The project is funded by a Starting Grant of the ERC. ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent investigators and their research teams to pursue ground-breaking, high-gain/high-risk research that cross disciplinary boundaries addressing new and emerging fields and introducing innovative approaches.
The researcher will be employed at the Department of Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Arts.
The project seeks to study the role of digital media in the shaping of transnational memories on disappearance. It investigates a novel case that is precisely in process of shaping: the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico in September 2014. The groundbreaking aspect of the project consists in proposing a double approach: one the one hand, a theoretical approach in which “disappearance” is considered as a particular crime that becomes a model for analyzing digital memory as a new configuration of memory in a digital age; on the other; a multidisciplinary approach situating Mexico´s case in a long transnational history of disappearance in the Hispanic World. This longer history seeks to compare disappearance as an object of memory practice in a broad-cast and a digital era in order to assess the differences, as well as shedding new light into the specificity of social, political and legal dimensions of the phenomena of disappearances in Mexico.
Focused on the Mexican’s case and combining insights from media studies, cultural studies, memory studies, social and political science, the project aims to provide a theoretical model for analyzing traumatic events that acquire a global dimension in/through the digital ecology.
