Postdoctoral Position in Experimental Quantum Optomechanics

ICFO is offering a research postdoctoral position to a well qualified, highly motivated and dynamic individual who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment. The successful candidate will be working at ICFO as part of the Plasmon Nano-optics group led by Prof. Romain Quidant.

One of the most intriguing questions associated with quantum physics is the classical-quantum boundary for systems of increasing size and complexity. As a first step towards this goal, much effort has recently been directed toward cooling mechanical oscillators into their motional quantum ground state. At this point in time where ground state cooling is within our reach, the field of quantum optomechanics offers a huge playground to test the laws of quantum mechanics at mesoscopic scales. Furthermore, quantum optomechanical oscillators promise to open new horizons towards novel sensing and metrology schemes with unprecedented sensitivity and engineering of quantum systems.

The present project sits at the frontier between nano-optics and quantum opto-mechanics and aims at combining the latest advances of both fields to design and experimentally study novel mechanical nano-oscillators with unique properties. The candidate will be working in a multidisciplinary environment, in close collaboration with other international groups.

The position is offered in the scope of the project QnanoMECA, awarded to Prof. Romain Quidant by the European Research Council (ERC).

Requirements & Conditions

Candidates must hold an internationally recognized Ph.D.-equivalent degree (or evidence of its completion in the nearest future) preferably in Quantum Physics. Experience in atom or ion trapping is highly desired.

The candidate should have a proven track record of excellence in academics and experimental research.

No restrictions of citizenship or gender apply to the ICFO positions.

The fellowship is offered for periods of one year, renewable for a total of up to 3 years. The annual renewal of the fellowship is conditional on satisfactory performance in research activities.

Application Process

The formal application should be submitted online via http://jobs.icfo.eu. Suitable candidates are requested to submit:
- Presentation letter with a declaration of interest,
- Curriculum Vitae, including full address, a contact phone number and e-mail address. The CV should also contain the contact information of the current or immediate prior employer and/or academic advisor.
- The contact details of at least two referees.

Candidates should be willing to be contacted by phone during the selection process.

Candidates may contact jobs@icfo.eu for informal inquiries regarding the application, and address scientific inquiries to romain.quidant@icfo.eu.

The call will remain open until May 31, 2016, or until suitable candidates are identified.
