Poetry London's Competition 2016
Poetry London‘s 2016 competition is now open for entries, and we are delighted to announce Sean O’Brien as this year’s judge.
O’Brien’s most recent book of poetry is The Beautiful Librarians: winner of the Roehampton Poetry Prize, a Poetry Book Society Choice and shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize.
O’Brien’s previous books, includingCollected Poems (2012), November (2011) and The Drowned Book (2007) have received awards including the T.S. Eliot Prize and three Forward Prizes for Best Collection. In addition to his poetry, he is Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, author of two novels, an acclaimed book of critical essays, The Deregulated Muse (1998), and has produced plays, libretti and short stories
The winning poems will be published in the Autumn 2016 issue of the magazine andcommendations will be published online. Prizes will be presented at the launch of the autumn issue in London.
1st prize: £1000
2nd prize: £500
3rd prize: £200
Four commendations: £75
COMPETITION RULES
Entries must be in English, your own unaided work, and not a translation of another poet. Entries must not have been previously published or self-published in print or online, or have won a prize in another competition.
The maximum length is 80 lines.
Your name and address must not appear on the poems, nor any other marks that could identify you. Please enter the title of each poem on the entry form, or the first line for untitled poems.
Entries must be typed or written clearly in black on white A4 paper or us letter size, and on one side of the paper only.
For poems that are longer than one page, the complete poem must be stapled in the top left hand corner. Please don’t staple different poems together. Each poem will be judged separately on its own merits.
You may enter as many poems as you wish, accompanied by the appropriate entry fee. ForPoetry London subscribers the entry fee is £3 per poem; for non-subscribers £7. You are also eligible for the lower entry fee if you take out a subscription now
Winners
Winners will be notified by 1 July 2016; the first, second and third prizewinners will be published in the Autumn 2016 issue of Poetry London and on the magazine’s website. The prizes will be awarded at our Autumn launch reading in London in September (date tbc). Copyright remains with the authors, but we reserve the right to publish the winning poems.
