Applications for invited for TWO PhD positions within the ERC funded project Creative Agency and Religious Minorities: ‘hidden galleries’ in the secret police archives in 20th Century Central and Eastern Europe within the Study of Religions Department, UCC.

This comparative project concerns the creative agency of religious minorities in the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe societies in the 20th century. The research will be both archival, in the archives of the secret police (CNSAS) in Romania and the National Archives in the Republic of Moldova, and ethnographic, amongst religious communities in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in the history of religions in 20th century Romania and/or Republic of Moldova and ethnographic experience.

Key aspects of the project will include:

  • periods of time conducting archival research in Romania/Republic of Moldova, 
  • periods of time conducting ethnographic research in Romania/Republic of Moldova, 
  • completing research skills courses and attending classes at UCC
  • contributing to the overall aims of the project

Applicants must have an MA in the study of religions/religious studies or a cognate discipline (anthropology, history, art history, folklore).
For Post 1 applicants must have native/fluent Romanian (knowledge of Hungarian also an advantage) For Post 2 applicants must have native/fluent Romanian and Russian.

PhD scholarship and fees will be funded for 4 years commencing October 1st 2016.

Salary: €16,000 + fees.
