PhD Fellowship in Developmental Biology of the Immune System 2017, University of Basel, Switzerland

Publish Date: Feb 16, 2017

Deadline: Mar 01, 2017

About the fellowhsip

The "Paediatric Immunology" research group at the Department of Biomedicine, University of Basel, Switzerland is looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD students to contribute to several projects that delineate the molecular and cellular pathways governing regular thymus organ formation and function.
Our research group focuses its research on the genetic and epigenetic circuits that govern the capacity to generate a repertoire of T cells able to distinguish between beneficial "Self" and potentially injurious "Non-Self" and has extensive expertise in developmental, cellular and molecular immunology as well as computational biology ( Nature Immunology 17 (2016): 1206, European Journal of Immunology 46 (2016): 846, European Journal of Immunology 45 (2015): 1760/2016, Cell Reports 13 ( 2015): 1432, Genome Research 24 (2014): 1918.

The Position

The successful candidates will be part of a team investigating (i) the genetic and epigenetic control of thymic epithelial cell (TEC) differentiation and function and (ii) the phenotypic nature and developmental potential of fetal and adult TEC precursor cells.

The Requirements

The successful applicant will have a Master of Science degree in molecular biology, immunology or molecular medicine, very good communication skills and the proven ability to successfully work in a team. A profound interest in immunology and developmental biology, knowledge of cellular and molecular techniques relevant for research in these areas, and experience with experimental animal models are essential.

Fluency in English (spoken and written) is expected, fluency in German is of advantage but not necessary.

We offer

The research group will provide a dynamic environment, unique experimental tools, access to state-of-the-art molecular and cellular methods, and a modern laboratory infrastructure to support you in every aspect of your scientific work. The projects will benefit from close collaborations with research groups at the University of Oxford, UK, in Japan and at the NIH, USA. The remuneration is according to the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Contact

Applicants should send their letter of motivation, CV, transcripts of relevant degrees and the names and email-addresses of three referees all combined into a single PDF file to
