Joint SDG research initiative - Tackling Global Challenges through Use-Inspired Research
NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development has joined forces with seven Dutch research organisations to make funding available for use-inspired research tackling global challenges to the benefit of the most vulnerable people in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Applications can be submitted by a senior researcher at one of the seven co-funding Dutch research organisations (Delft University of Technology, Erasmus University Rotterdam, UNESCO-IHE, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University, VU University Amsterdam, Wageningen University & Research).
Purpose
Through the call ‘Tackling Global Challenges through Use-Inspired Research’ NWO-WOTRO and the co-financing research organisations aim to contribute to tangible solutions for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in one or multiple LMIC(s). Projects should result in tangible output, other than knowledge, such as tools, services, marketable products or evidence-based (policy) advices. Research projects should evolve in a process of co-creation and international collaboration to enhance sharing and use of generated knowledge.
Who can apply
Applications can be submitted by a senior researcher employed by (one of ) the co-funding research organisations. The main applicant must collaborate in a consortium executing the project and consisting of at least:
- one of the co-funding Dutch research organisations, and;
- one research organisation or practitioner organisation located in the LMIC(s) that is (are) targeted.
Please note: Each research organisation co-funding the programme can submit a minimum of two and a maximum of four proposals. Therefore, proposals can only be submitted after the approval of the research organisation.
What to apply for
For each research project with a duration of four years, a maximum budget of 0.5 million euro will be made available. When two of the co-funding research organisations work together within one project, the maximum budget for such a project can amount up to 1 million euro.
Applicants can budget only for costs that directly attribute to the project:
- Personnel costs of project staff;
- Research costs;
- Knowledge sharing & utilisation costs.

- The closing date for the submission of full proposals is Tuesday, 23 May 2017, 14.00 hrs(CET).
Assessment
Criteria
Assessment will take place on the basis of the following three criteria:
- Scientific quality;
- Relevance for development;
- Co-creation and knowledge sharing (and utilisation) approach.

Procedure
Reviewers and rebuttal
After a formal eligibility check, proposals will be reviewed on the basis of the selection criteria mentioned above. Independent, international expert advisors (peer reviewers) will pre-assess the proposals for all criteria. At least two referees' reports will be requested for all admissible proposals. The main applicant will be offered the opportunity to respond within five working days to the comments of the experts.
Advice
During an assessment meeting, the International Advisory Committee (IAC) will discuss all proposals, pre-assessment reports and responses thereof by the applicant, and will rank the proposals. Based on the ranking, the IAC will present an advice on funding to the Programme Committee (PC). A maximum of two proposals of each co-funding research organisation each with an overall assessment of at least 'very good’ will be taken into account for funding.
Funding decision
The PC will decide on funding of proposals, based on the advice of the IAC and depending the available call budget.
