Postdoctoral Fellow in Science and Technology Studies (STS): Enacting the Good Economy: Biocapitalization and the little tools of valuation

Job Description

TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture, University of Oslo (UiO), invites candidates to apply for a 2,2 year Postdoctoral Fellowship which includes ten percent duties.

The Centre wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow with knowledge of Science and Technology Studies (STS), as well as demonstrated research capabilities and a strong interest in the development of STS research both theoretically and empirically.

The announced position is part of the ERC Starting Grant project: Enacting the Good Economy: Biocapitalization and the little tools of valuation. The Little Tools project examines science-society exchanges by exploring how the sciences are becoming part of policy ambitions to enable a new blue bioeconomy. Empirically the project studies the aquaculture sector and how science is made integral to biocapitalization efforts. Theoretically the project will contribute to the subfield of STS research known as ‘valuation studies’ and has as its objective to study the means of valuation; what in the project is defined as ‘little tools’. Method questions are core to the project which will develop along a set of cross-cutting themes; the issue of time and timing, the material and the semiotic, the biological and the economic.

The recruited postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the larger project team and cover core topics in the Little Tools project. As part of The Little Tools project the postdoctoral fellow is invited to study valuation practices linked to the making of markets and the mapping of consumer behavior and preferences. The project will study how market studies, innovation strategies and economics more broadly are involved in these efforts at enacting the marine bioeconomy. Familiarity with valuation studies in STS and the ability to study economic practices empirically from a STS, economic history or economic sociology perspective is key to this project.

The candidate’s work will be situated within the Centre’s research group for Science and Technology Studies. The STS group at TIK combines interests in developing STS-methods with a strong research profile in pursuing empirical analyses of science, technology and politics in practice. Researchers in the STS group work predominantly with qualitative methods and with historical as well contemporary materials. Please see TIKs website for more information. The research group has a strong track record in scientific publishing and close ties to many internationally leading STS environments and networks.

Qualifications and Personal Skills

The applicant for the postdoctoral fellowship should preferably hold a PhD in STS/valuation studies. Candidates holding a PhD in the humanities or the social sciences with demonstrated capacity to engage with STS related methods and analytical approaches will also be considered. Familiarity with valuation studies, the ability to study economic practices empirically from a STS, economic history or economic sociology perspective is a key qualification.

In addition to relevant educational background, successful candidates must have demonstrated experience in relevant areas of research. Documented experience in engaging with method issues is meritorious for the position as is knowledge of the aqua culture sector, biology and/or fishery science. The candidate must have demonstrated very good cooperation skills and the ability to work closely with others.

Applicants must have excellent written and oral proficiency in English and preferably also in Norwegian (or other Scandinavian language).

We Offer

  • Pay grade 57 - 64 (NOK 483 700 -550 400 per annum)
  • Academically stimulating working environment
  • Good pension benefits under the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund scheme

Evaluation of the application

Emphasis will be given to the candidate’s educational background, research experience, and the quality and thematic relevance of the applicant’s project description for his/her proposed postdoctoral project. The applicant’s personal prerequisites to carry out the project will also be given weight.

Interviews will be part of the appointment process.

The electronic application should include:

  • Application letter
