Fellowships at The Huntington

Scholars come from around the world every year to conduct advanced humanities research using The Huntington’s collections. Through a rigorous peer-review program, the institution awards approximately 200 fellowships to scholars in the fields of history, literature, art, and the history of science. These scholarly pursuits lead to best-selling books, Pulitzer Prizes, acclaimed documentary films, and many of the history and social studies textbooks that educate the nation’s school children. The Huntington's independent research library has significant holdings in British and American history; British and American literature; art history, the history of science and medicine; and the history of the book. The collections range chronologically from the eleventh century to the present and include 7 million manuscripts, 450,000 rare books, 440,000 reference works, and 1.3 million photographs, prints, and ephemera. A remarkable collection in the history of science and technology consists of some 67,000 rare books and reference volumes, as well as an important collection of scientific instruments. The Art Collections contain several notable British and American paintings; innumerable fine prints and photographs; and an art reference library. In the library of the Botanical Gardens is a broad collection of reference works in botany, horticulture, and gardening.

Applying for a Fellowship

For those interested in applying for a 2018-2019 academic year fellowship, applications will be accepted beginning Sept. 1, 2017, with a submission deadline of midnight PST on Nov. 15, 2017. Recipients of all fellowships are expected to be in continuous residence at The Huntington and to participate in and make a contribution to its intellectual life. The fellowship year begins on June 1, 2018, and ends on June 30, 2019.

Application Guidelines

Applications are to be submitted online and consist of the following:

• Project description not to exceed 1,500 words. This should consist of two parts: description of the project and its significance (approx. 1,000 words); description of the specific Huntington materials to be consulted and an outline of the plan of work for the fellowship period (approx. 500 words). Applicants for travel grants/exchange fellowships should describe the materials to be consulted in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Document should be single-spaced, font size; 11 pts. (approx. three pages). The project description will be considered by a panel of scholars from a variety of humanities disciplines and should be written for non-specialists.
• Curriculum vitae of no more than three pages.
• Letters of recommendation: TWO letters for short-term awards and travel grants/exchange fellowships; THREE letters for long-term awards.
