The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki with a mission to be a top-class, international and attractive research environment in humanities and social sciences. The Collegium aims to produce innovative research in humanities and social sciences and to strengthen interaction between different fields of academic research. Collegium researchers cooperate with university faculties and participate in doctoral training.

The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies invites applications for 8–14 POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS/ UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS /RESEARCH DIRECTORS for fixed terms to begin on 1 September 2018. Research directors’ terms are from 0.5 to one year, post-doctoral and university researchers’ terms are from one to two years. The Director of the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies will determine the number and length of the appointments on the basis of the applicants’ research proposals and the financial situation of the Collegium.

Appointees for the post-doctoral researcher’s post shall, according to the regulations of the University of Helsinki, hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work. Appointees for the university researcher’s post shall hold a doctoral degree, have evidence of scholarly research work as well as the ability to lead a research group and obtain supplementary research funding. When selecting the appointees, international scholarly work and evidence of international cooperation shall be given particular consideration. Appointees to the position of research director shall have the experience and qualifications equivalent to those of an appointee to a professorship, but when considering the career of such applicants, special attention shall be paid to scholarly work, the ability to successfully lead a research group and obtain supplementary research funding and evidence of international research cooperation.

Successful applicants will have research experience in humanities and social sciences and will provide evidence of their ability to work in a high-level international research environment. In their application, those who apply must also demonstrate how they plan to engage in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary cooperation internationally and in cooperation with the researchers of the University of Helsinki. The working language of the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies is English.

The salary will be based on both the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities, and on the employee’s personal work performance. The appointees to the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies are scholars at different stages of their careers.
