The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Vici is a grant for senior researchers

The Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Vici is a grant for senior researchers.

Purpose

Vici is a funding instrument from the Talent Scheme. It gives senior researchers the opportunity to build up their own research group, often in anticipation of a tenured professorship. The research group must become structurally embedded in the research institution.

Who can apply

Vici is targeted at outstanding senior researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research, and to act as coaches for young researchers. Researchers who have obtained their PhD within the last 15 years can apply for a Vici grant. There may be a possibility of an extension in some cases. Further information is available in the document Frequently Asked Questions. A researcher can submit a maximum of three Vici preproposals throughout his/her career.

What can be applied for

The maximum grant is 1.5 million euros.

When to apply

  • Submission deadline for the 2017 round (pre-proposals) is 23 March 2017, 14:00 hrs (CET).
  • Closing date for the submission of full proposals is 24 August 2017, 14:00 hrs (CEST).

When you submit your application to ISAAC/ ProjectNet you need to enter several additional details online. We strongly advise you to start applying at least a day before the deadline.  Applications that are submitted after the deadline will not be included in the procedure.

Assessment

All Vici applications are assessed in a nationwide competition.

Criteria

The assessment criteria are:

  • quality of the researcher
  • quality, innovative character and academic impact of the research proposal
  • knowledge utilisation

Procedure

The assessment procedure of the 2017 Vici round aligns with NWO’s new organisational structure. The Vici competition will be assessed by five committees: four committees corresponding to the four new NWO domains and one committee for cross-domain applications. The five committees are: Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), NWO-Science domain (ENW), Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES),  Health Research and Development (ZonMW) and the cross-domain committee.

Vici applications are assessed in a domain-wide competition: all applications from different disciplines within one domain will be compared in one competition. The domains use broad-based assessment committees of academics to advise on the merits and prioritisation of the applications.

Applicants must first submit a pre-proposal. These are assessed by one of the five assessment committees, which then makes a recommendation on whether or not to submit a full proposal. Full proposals are sent to external referees. Applicants are given the opportunity to respond to the referees’ reports (‘rebuttal’). Next, the full proposals, the reviews and the rebuttals are assessed by the respective assessment committees. They invite a selection of the candidates for an interview. Based on the application, the referees’ reports, the rebuttal and the interview the assessment committee advises the accredited board of NWO.

All proposals must be submitted via ISAAC, NWO' s electronic application system. The only exceptions to this rule are applications to the Health Research and Development domain. These applications can only be submitted via ProjectNet.

Aspasia

Aspasia is a grant linked to the Vidi and Vici competitive grant scheme. The following are eligible for Aspasia:

  • female researchers who have been awarded a grant under the Vidi and Vici scheme
  • female researchers who met the criteria for Vidi or Vici after the interview procedure, but did not receive a grant due to a funding shortfall.

The Aspasia grant is awarded to Executive Boards that promote female candidates to the position of assistant or full professor within a year after the decisions in the Vidi or Vici round.
