Folger Shakespeare Library Fellowships 2016, USA

Publish Date: Jun 15, 2016

Deadline: Nov 01, 2016

Folger fellowships support research that advances new scholarly agendas and makes use of collections of rare books, manuscripts, and art from and about the early modern period.

Each year, the Folger Institute awards five long-term and several dozen short-term fellowships. Residential fellowships are supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, endowments from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and additional named endowments. The criteria for eligibility are explained below for each category of fellowship. In addition to the annual competitions, the Folger Institute may use its discretion to make additional awards and to supplement stipends. In a new initiative, we invite applications for short-term fellowships from creative artists whose work will benefit from engagement with the Folger collections.

Long-term fellowships

Long-term fellowships support scholars in residence for six to nine months. The monthly stipend is $5,555.55 for a maximum of $50,000 (for nine months). Should their schedules allow, long-term fellows are welcome to remain in residence for up to a year.

The fellowships program assembles an external committee of scholars, aiming for disciplinary, methodological and geographical diversity. Committee membership changes annually. The committee is charged to evaluate the applications based on the proposed topic’s importance, the originality and sophistication of the approach, the feasibility of the research objectives, and the use of Folger collections. The Institute’s Executive Director chairs the committee meeting and reviews the committee’s recommendations in light of the Folger’s standards of professional ethics and conflicts of interest (policies concerning which are described to the committee members in advance). At its discretion, the Folger may supplement committee recommendations.

The next deadline for long-term fellowship applications is November 1, 2016 for periods of residence from July 2017 through June 2018.

Short-term fellowships

Short-term fellowships support scholars in residence for one to three months with a monthly stipend of $2,500. In addition to scholars already holding the PhD, eligible applicants also include librarians and other researchers holding appropriate terminal degrees. We do not have fellowships to offer graduate students, who may instead look for research opportunities in other Folger Institute programs.

Chaired by the Folger Institute Executive Director, a review committee of Folger professional staff and invited scholars will evaluate the applications based on the following criteria: the proposed topic’s importance, the originality and sophistication of the approach, the feasibility of the research objectives, and the use of our collections. Applications for short-term fellowships should focus on the work to be accomplished in the period of residence.  The deadline for application is March 1, 2017 for a period of residence from June 2017 through June 2018. Please note that the addition of June at the beginning of the fellowship year allows for a three-month, summer fellowship. Please see the FAQs for further information about the fellowship year.
