Fellowships for Journalism and Women Symposium
The annual JAWS CAMP focuses on strengthening core journalism skills, building personal brands and careers, developing strategies for success in our evolving media landscape, improving gender parity in our profession, empowering women in leadership and management, and encouraging a more accurate portrayal of the whole society. Participants enjoy a dynamic weekend filled with inspiring speakers, motivating career development sessions and rewarding networking and mentoring opportunities. It’s an experience that has helped launch countless careers, and it’s also ignited lifelong friendships.
This year’s JAWS CAMP will be held at the Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Virginia, from Oct. 28 to 30, 2016. Fellowship applications open on Friday, April 15, and close Sunday, May 15.
*Note: JAWS welcomes international applicants but will not offer letters of invitation for visas, nor do we pay for international airfare. The applicant must be able to legally travel to (and stay in) the U.S. on their own. If applicant is chosen for fellowship, JAWS will handle their domestic transportation to CAMP 2016, along with all of the other benefits of winning the fellowship.
EMERGING JOURNALIST FELLOWSHIP
The Journalism and Women Symposium each year selects 10 women who are just starting careers in journalism as Emerging Journalist fellows. These fellows are brought to the annual JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP), where they meet industry leaders and trailblazers, and have the opportunity to learn new skills and share their own.
Emerging Journalist fellowships are open to professionals in the early stages of their careers. We are looking for journalists with at least one but no more than five years of professional journalism experience. Winners are selected based on a combination of merit, financial need and their potential contribution to JAWS as an organization that supports diversity across race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, media platform, beat and location. Fellowships cover CAMP registration and travel expenses. Fellows will be asked to blog the weekend’s events for the JAWS website and to help JAWS spread the word about our GoFundMe fellowship fundraising campaign throughout June and July. Fellows also receive a one-year JAWS membership or renewal.
Please note: the JAWS Emerging Journalist fellowship is not open to undergraduate students. Graduate students may apply. We encourage undergraduates to become involved by joining JAWS at the student rate and attending JAWS events and regional gatherings.

The application for the fellowship includes:
- A one-page résumé
- Two samples of your professional, published work in journalism.
- A word document with brief descriptions of your submitted samples and links to them.
- Personal Statement (no more than 500 words) – Why is an organization like JAWS important to you? What will you contribute to the group? Would you be able to attend CAMP without financial assistance from JAWS (elaborate)?
- One letter of recommendation from a current or previous editor, producer or supervisor in journalism. We would prefer to receive the recommendation letter attached with the rest of your application. However, if your recommender would rather email the letter directly to the fellowship committee, please ask him/her to include your first and last name in the subject line.

THE NEXT STEP FELLOWSHIP
Each year the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) brings a Next Step fellow to our annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) for three days of training, networking and professional development. In the turbulent world of today’s journalism, women with established careers often need to explore new avenues for practicing their craft. JAWS will recognize these veteran journalists by bringing at least one to CAMP 2016, where she can participate in hands-on technical and social media workshops, individual mentoring and lots of informal brainstorming to figure out next steps and learn about new opportunities in the rapidly changing new media landscape.
The Next Step fellowship stipend covers registration and travel costs for the weekend.

Applicants should be at a career point where they want to shift gears and find new opportunities. They should have a substantive record of at least 15 years working as a journalist and have been a paid up member of JAWS for at least five years. Preference will be given to those meeting these qualifications who would not otherwise be able to attend CAMP.

DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP
The Journalism and Women Symposium each year selects one journalist from a community traditionally underrepresented in the media, and whose work supports diversity. The Financial Times is generously underwriting the JAWS Diversity Fellowship.
The fellowship stipend covers registration and travel expenses to the annual JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP), where the fellow will meet industry leaders and trailblazers, and have the opportunity to learn new skills and share their own. The goal of the Diversity Fellowship is to help the practice of journalism better reflect society. This is an opportunity for journalists who are traditionally underrepresented in newsrooms, including but not limited to women of color, journalists in the LGBTQ community and those with disabilities.
As part of the application, prospective fellows are asked for a personal statement. Be sure to show how you add a diverse voice to the media landscape and highlight efforts you have made to improve representation of diverse groups in media.
Fellows will be asked to blog the weekend’s events for the JAWS website and to help JAWS spread the word about our GoFundMe fellowship fundraising campaign throughout June and July.

ENTREPRENEURIAL FELLOWSHIP
Each year the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) brings an Entrepreneurial fellow to our annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) for three days of training, networking and professional development. The fellowship stipend covers registration and travel costs for the weekend.
The goal of the Entrepreneurial Fellowship is to help a woman journalist move forward with an innovative journalism project. JAWS will help bring this entrepreneur to CAMP 2016, where she will have the opportunity to mine the JAWS brain trust and explore skills that will be useful for her proposed project. The fellowship covers CAMP registration and most travel expenses.
Applicants should be journalists with a well-conceived project, the background that shows they can do it, and at least five years of professional experience. Preference is given to current JAWS members.
