Dr. Günther Findel-Stiftung / Rolf und Ursula Schneider-Stiftung
General Information
Thanks to the initiatives by private foundations (Dr. Günther Findel-Stiftung/Rolf und Ursula Schneider-Stiftung) fellowships programmes for doctoral candidates have been established at the Herzog August Bibliothek. These programmes are open to applicants from Germany and abroad and from all disciplines. Candidates who already hold scholarships (eg. state or college awards or grants from Graduiertenkollegs) or can apply for a rent subsidy to help finance their stay in Wolfenbüttel.
Applicants may apply for a fellowship of between 2 and 10 months, if research on their dissertation topic necessitates the use of the Wolfenbüttel holdings. The fellowship is € 1.100 per month. Fellowship holders are housed in library accommodation for the duration of the fellowship and pay the rent from their fellowship. There is also an allowance of € 100 per month to cover costs of copying, reproductions etc. Candidates can apply for a travel allowance if no funds are available to them from other sources.

Application deadlines: October 1st or April 1st. The Board holds its selection meetings in February and July. Successful applicants can take up the award from April 1st or October 1st onwards each year.

Fellowships are awarded by the Foundations Boards. Outside evaluators will be asked for assessments on applications. The Boards' decision-making process is facilitated by a Selection Committee. Fellowship Programme Expanded in the Field of Musicology
The library is also calling for applications for a fellowship of two months in the field of the history of music. This fellowship is a bequest from musicologist Dr Gudrun Busch who worked intensively with the library’s holdings for many years.
Fellowships are awarded by the Foundations Boards. Terms and conditions as stated above apply.
New: Fellowship Programme Expanded: Footnote Fund
Former holders of fellowships from the foundations can now apply for further financial support. The Footnote Fund supports scholars who are either at the final stage of their doctorate or are working on the revision for the publication and wish to return to the library for a short stay – for example, should they need to review or add further source material. The fellowship is 300 Euros for Germans and 500 Euros for international applicants. Please request an application form (contact).
This welcome expansion to the doctoral programme was made possible thanks to the generous response to an appeal for financial support launched on the occasion of the anniversary of the Dr. Günther Findel-Stiftung in 2013. Further contributions are of course welcome.
Fellowships "Digital Humanities"
The Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel research association is calling for applications for several fellowships in the field of Digital Humanities, ideally lasting for six months (at least three, a maximum of twelve). The programme is open to all disciplines and is directed towards young scholars (graduates at Master level) from Germany and abroad. Applicants must be working on a project linked to the interests and collections of one of the three institutions and make use of methods and techniques from the Digital Humanities (e.g. Markup Methods for Electronic Editions, Stylometry, Topic Modelling, Visualisation).

Fellowships in the Joint Research Project “Kupferstichkabinett online”
The State of Lower Saxony is funding a Joint Research Project “Kupferstichkabinett online”. The cooperating institutions are the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel and the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum Braunschweig. These institutions can award a postdoctoral and a doctoral six-month fellowship at each institution in 2016. The aim is to support researchers who wish to work with the institutions’ engravings collections or on the history of their respective collections. Fellows are expected to contribute to the academic life of the library and the museum as well as to participate in scholarly exchange. Fellowships for scholars who have already received their PhD are € 1.800, for doctoral students the rates is € 1000 per month. Travel costs up to € 300 are also covered. The fellows are required to reside either in Wolfenbüttel or Braunschweig (guest houses are available in Wolfenbüttel and can also accommodate those scholars working in Braunschweig).

The American Friends of the HAB Travel Grant
The American Friends of the HAB offers travel grants of up to $1,500 to assist young US Citizens (or permanent US Residents) who are in the process of writing dissertations based on the rich collections of the Herzog August Bibliothek. Students may either apply directly or be nominated by their doctoral advisers. The choice of successful applicants is made by the Executive Committee of the American Friends. Competition is open to US students in all the fields in which the HAB has significant holdings. The travel grants may be used in conjunction with a doctoral fellowship from the library. The quickest and easiest way to request an application form by e-mail is to contact Prof. Gerhild Scholz Williams (Washington University, St Louis). The applicant's stay at the HAB made possible by the travel grant is expected to last for at least four weeks in order to allow enough time for work with the collection.
