The Center for Religious Studies at Central European University is pleased to announce the availability of a one-year (12 month) research fellowship for AY2017/18 in the field of the study of religion very broadly understood, commencing January 2018 (start date in AY 2017/18 negotiable with selected candidate).

The Center for Religious Studies (CRS) is a cross departmental unit that serves as an academic forum at CEU fostering the study of religion. The mission of the center is to organize MA and PhD studies towards the Advanced Certificate in Religious Studies, to initiate and to coordinate research, to disseminate the results of research by mounting academic events, and to issue publications that address religion-related questions in critical ways. The CRS crosses the borders of disciplines, confessional and geo-political categorizations, and covers historical periods from ancient to modern times. With institutional projects and contacts throughout the region and worldwide, the CRS provides an important site for academic research and communication.

CRS current research interests include:

  • the cognitive and psychological structures of religious experience
  • the religious dimensions of political thought and collective action
  • the textual and ritual transmission of religious cultures
  • the shaping of orthodoxies and of intellectual and social dissent
  • cross-religious processes, including polemics, conversion, and cultural transfers

Duties and responsibilities:

The Research Fellow is expected to pursue a specific line of research as outlined in their application material, to engage with the life and activities of the Center for Religious Studies, and participate actively in scholarly events such as the CRS lecture series and its doctoral colloquium. The stipend has been set according to CEU standards and is competitive for the region.

Qualifications:

Applicants should be holders of doctoral degrees received no earlier than January 2013 from relevant fields in the humanities or social sciences, and be young scholars of exceptional promise with a track record appropriate to their career stage. The disciplinary and thematic areas of specialization, including geographical regions and chronological time spans of research, are open, but preference will be given to candidates with broad cross-disciplinary perspectives, a demonstrable and meaningful interest in comparative work and with a mastery of the theories and research methods proper to Religious Studies.

How to apply:

Applicants need to submit:

  • academic curriculum vitae
  • representative publication or writing sample
  • research proposal with an abstract
  • contact information for two referees
  • the covering letter should describe research and achievements so far and a statement of what the candidate hopes to accomplish during the tenure of the Fellowship

The deadline for applications is June 30, 2017.
