Beatrice Warde Scholarship Undergraduate Female Students

Publish Date: Jan 05, 2016

Deadline: Feb 11, 2016

While going through our archives, the Type Directors Club discovered that Beatrice Warde was its first female member. It was very exciting to learn that Ms. Warde, journalist, typographical scholar, and communicator on typography, was part of our organization. To honor her memory, TDC has named a scholarship after her.

The TDC Beatrice Warde Scholarship is sponsored by the Type Directors Club and Monotype in the amount of $5,000. It will be awarded to a female student currently enrolled in her junior undergraduate year and will be applied directly to her senior year tuition, which begins September 2016 and concludes in May 2017.

To apply, submit this form and other application materials by Thursday, February 11, 2016 to director@tdc.org

Beatrice Warde (1900-1969) enthusiastically believed in the merits of education and championed them throughout her professional career with the Monotype Corporation. Her office was an open door for any person interested in typography, and numerous people in the initial stages of their careers began their education with a visit. Her steadfast aim was to help all people understand typography better, which remained her focus in nearly every one of her hundreds of essays, books, articles, and lectures throughout her career.

The scholarship, based solely on merit, will be awarded to a student whose work demonstrates exceptional talent, sophistication, and skill in the use of typography. The criteria for the scholarship extends across disciplines from design criticism to type design and graphic design, since Beatrice Warde was a writer and educator who helped promote Monotype products. Just as Beatrice encouraged the best use of technology, the candidate’s work should demonstrate the application of typography to current media, not only print. The scholarship requirements include a statement and three samples of work accomplished while at school/university, and a grade point average of B or higher. The applicant must sign a statement verifying that it is her work. Letters of recommendation will be required after the first round of selection is completed. Candidates will be selected by the Committee.

In addition to the scholarship award, the student will receive an one-year student membership in the TDC. The membership includes receiving the TDC annual, keepsakes, and invitations to all TDC programs.

The check for $5,000 will be sent to the registrar of the recipient’s school/university in August, 2016, to be entered into the tuition account of the scholarship recipient. Students will not receive the scholarship monies directly.

In the event that the first place scholarship choice does not, for any reason, return to her school for the designated year, the $5,000 check will be entered into the tuition account of the runner up.

The Beatrice Warde Scholarship Committee consists of the Type Directors Club: TDC Scholarship Chair Gail Anderson (School of Visual Arts), Cara diEdwardo (The Cooper Union), Carol Wahler (TDC Executive Director); Monotype: Nadine Chahine, Vikki Quick, Emma Tucker, Daniel Ratigan, James Fooks-Bale, Shelley Gruendler (Type Camp International), and Fiona Ross, (University of Reading).

The selected student will receive a certificate at the TDC62nd opening event in July, 2016 at The Cooper Union.

The deadline for students to submit their application and samples is Thursday, February 11, 2016.
