Deadline: Feb 07, 2019

Journalism Trainee Scheme

The Journalism Trainee Scheme runs in England, Scotland and Wales. You only need to apply to one location for your application to be considered for all.

Please only apply once. Duplicate applications (i.e. applications for Journalism Trainee Scheme in England, as well as the Journalism Trainee Scheme in Scotland) will not be accepted. We cannot guarantee that you will be placed in your preferred location but will take your interest into account.

During this 10 month scheme, you will undertake training while working alongside news teams in online and digital, radio and TV news. These placements will offer you hands-on experience involving researching, writing and broadcasting news.

Locations

Our Journalism Trainee Scheme has placements in the following locations this year:

  • London
  • Salford
  • Glasgow
  • Wales (there is also an opportunity for a Welsh Language trainee)

You will have the opportunity to state your preference on the application form.

Start Date

September 2019

Who are you?

  • You are a curious and creative writer who will enjoy meeting people and sharing their stories.
  • You already have the ability to show journalistic skills through previous experience or work that you are doing such as blogging/vlogging, working at a local newspaper or radio.
  • You have an understanding of audiences and how to reach them, including people who might not normally consume news
  • You are a graduate or already have some solid skills and knowledge in journalism from previous experience.
  • You will be 18 or over by the time the scheme starts in the autumn

What are we offering?

  • A 10 month contract paying £21,216 per year (pro rata). If you are based in London, the salary is £25,776 per year (pro rata).
  • We cover travel and accommodation expenses during training periods.
  • First-rate training led by the BBC throughout the scheme by specialists and senior BBC journalists.
  • A mentor to support and guide you during your training.
  • The chance to work on placements within BBC News and Current Affairs across radio, television, digital and online.

Application process

You will be required to complete an application form. The form consists of questions that will allow you to tell us about your experience, how you can help us to better reach our audiences and your ideas for a story. This is followed by a series of questions, which will give us an insight into how you would behave in certain work scenarios as a journalist at the BBC.

After the closing date on 7th February 2019, your application will be reviewed and if we like what we see you will go through to the next stage. This stage is a video interview and you will be asked to answer one or more questions.  This will help us to get to know you better as you will need to submit a video response.

The successful candidates at the video interview stage will be invited to an assessment centre day which takes in late May. The scheme will begin in September 2019.

You will have the opportunity to let us know if you have a disability both on the application form and before your assessment.

With the exception of our specialist placements which are location specific, trainees cannot choose a particular location when they apply. Should you be selected, you will however be able to state a preference at the interview stage.

When applying you need to be flexible about where you live, as well as your working hours. Working at the BBC is not a Monday to Friday nine-to-five job.
