History or background of award
This scholarship has been established through the Victoria University Foundation from a generous bequest made by Barbara Finlayson. The first awards were made at the end of 1997.
Purpose of award
The Scholarship will be awarded annually to New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) violin, viola and violoncello students at any level. NZSM string staff may also apply. A particular purpose of the scholarship is to fund postgraduate study, as well as travel, accommodation and other expenses incurred in the pursuit of such study, both within and outside New Zealand.
Selection criteria
The award is available to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and international students.
The award will be based on merit. Students should provide a supporting letter outlining reasons for application and the nature of their studies. References and a detailed budget covering expenses must be included.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The Victoria University Foundation will expect recipients to write a letter of thanks to the donor or donor's representative on receipt of the award and an end of year progress report.

Value:
The value of the Scholarship will be determined each year according to the interest available from the endowment. It is expected, however, that it will normally be worth $14,000 per annum.
