LEXICOGRAPHY

AND

DICTIONARIES

IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE

Tuesday 3 – Wednesday 4 September 2019

To be held at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia

CALL FOR PAPERS

Dictionaries are believed to be under threat, with the shift to digital format and the ongoing undermining of expertise by crowdsourced sites contributing to a perception that dictionaries are no longer needed. Dictionaries are undoubtedly changing and evolving in form and function, but they also remain critically important in providing reliable lexical information and for documenting language.

This year’s AustraLex, held during the International Year of Indigenous Languages, aims to highlight the ongoing importance and relevance of dictionaries, to explore the many ways in which lexical information continues to be important, and to celebrate the contribution of lexicography and dictionaries to society and culture.

Papers on the following themes are particularly encouraged:

  • The contribution of dictionaries to areas such as education
  • Dictionaries and the documentation of Indigenous and endangered languages
  • How dictionaries and lexicography are talked about in the public sphere
  • Public impacts of lexicography
  • The changing forms and functions of dictionaries

Other topics relevant to lexicography and its practice are also welcomed.

Keynote speaker: Professor Jakelin Troy, University of Sydney
