American Council on Germany McCloy Fellowships 2017, USA

Publish Date: Feb 08, 2017

Deadline: May 31, 2017

MCCLOY FELLOWSHIPS

In a rapidly changing, complex, and interconnected world, it is becoming increasingly important to analyze tomorrow’s challenges today. Through the McCloy Fellowships on Global Trends, the American Council on Germany is tackling overarching issues that affect communities around the world – but especially in Germany and the United States – in the areas of urbanization, climate change and sustainability, technological breakthroughs, and demographics and social change.

The fellowships allow American and German experts from journalism, the public sector, think tanks, nonprofits, law, and cultural organizations to research and assess the most pressing topics on the transatlantic agenda while engaging with their counterparts overseas. The fellowships are designed to enhance broader understanding of key policy issues related to global trends while promoting networking across the Atlantic.

Applicants should present a project proposal of three to five pages detailing their plans, including the background, scope of the research, and how it addresses tomorrow’s topics today, the general sources and institutions with whom they would like to consult, and the relevance for the transatlantic relationship. Proposals must address one of the following global trends: climate change and sustainability, demographics and social change, technological breakthroughs, and urbanization.

A research itinerary for the duration of the fellowship will be further developed in conjunction with the Program Director.

Fellows receive a $5,000 stipend, which covers transatlantic airfare and domestic travel, as well as room and board, for a minimum of 21 days. Fellows are required to work closely with the Program Director to organize a detailed day-by-day itinerary before the stipend is released. Travel must take place within one calendar year of selection.

Upon completing their international travel, fellows are required to submit an analytical report on their findings. This report must be suitable for publication by the American Council on Germany. Fellows are also asked to share their research with a wider audience through presentations and discussions at ACG Warburg Chapters and/or their local communities, as well as on social media.

The McCloy Fellowships are named after John J. McCloy, the founding Chairman of the ACG and the first civilian U.S. High Commissioner for Germany. He strongly believed that younger Americans and Germans benefit greatly from meeting their counterparts and peers. For more than 40 years, the ACG has provided nearly 1,000 McCloy Fellowships to outstanding individuals.

To apply, please submit the following:

  • An application form;
  • A cover letter outlining your personal and professional objectives for the fellowship;
  • A three- to five-page project proposal as described above;
  • A current resume;
  • Two letters of recommendation.
