About Visiting Fellowships Program
Visiting Fellowships are intended to enable their holders to carry out study and research in Oxford and to participate in the academic life of the University. Visiting Fellowships are awarded for one, two, or three terms of an academic year. Applications will be considered from staff of any university or other institution of higher learning, and from other suitably qualified persons who wish to carry out scholarly work in Oxford. Visiting Fellowships are open in all subjects, and to men and women from all countries. The closing date for applications for the academic year beginning October 2016 is 4 September 2015 and applicants can expect to hear the outcome of their application in November.
Further Particulars
Each year the College offers a number of Visiting Fellowships to people who intend to engage in study and research in Oxford and are prepared to participate in the academic life of the College. Visiting Fellows are expected to be resident in Oxford during the tenure of the Fellowship. A Visiting Fellow may be elected for a period of one, two, or three terms within the Oxford academic year.
The dates of term at Oxford for 2016–2017 are:
Michaelmas Term (from Sunday, 9 October to Saturday, 3 December, 2016)
Hilary Term (from Sunday, 15 January to Saturday, 11 March, 2017)
Trinity Term (from Sunday, 23 April to Saturday, 17 June, 2017)
Visiting Fellows are normally expected to be resident in Oxford during term. The period of the Visiting Fellowship extends for an additional two weeks either side of each term. Accommodation for Fellows who are elected for the Michaelmas term should be available from mid-September, and for Visiting Fellows with school-age children it is usually possible to arrange an earlier arrival, or later departure, date in order to harmonise with school terms. Visiting Fellows who are elected for more than one term may also be in residence during the vacation(s) between those terms.
The College usually aims to accommodate nine or ten Visiting Fellows in each term.
Eligibility
Most Visiting Fellows are holders of university posts, but the College welcomes applications from others, including those in public life (e.g. in law, public policy, or the arts) who wish to carry out scholarly work in Oxford. Visiting Fellowships are not normally offered to candidates who before the end of their tenure of the fellowship would have reached the retirement age in force for academic fellows of the College (67). There is no limitation upon the field of study. There is no lower age limit, but, given the number of applications we receive, candidates with recent doctorates are unlikely to succeed in the competition. It is the College’s policy not to offer Visiting Fellowships to persons holding posts in Oxford or who are already resident in or near Oxford.
What the Fellowship Offers
Although Visiting Fellows are not members of the governing body of the College, they enjoy nearly all the privileges of ordinary Fellows (including lunches and dinners without charge). The College normally provides without charge a study in College and fully-furnished residential accommodation in Oxford. This accommodation is large enough to accommodate a partner if wished, and accommodation suitable for Visiting Fellows accompanied by very young or school age children can usually also be provided.
There is no salary attached to Visiting Fellowships and Visiting Fellows are expected to meet their own visa and medical insurance costs. In exceptional circumstances the College may offer limited financial help. Selection Procedures
The College has to choose every year from among a large number of well-qualified applicants, in widely varied fields of study. In making this choice, we give weight to intellectual quality, to the interest and feasibility of the research project, and to the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford. We therefore ask applicants to include with their application form a full statement, of not more than a thousand words, of the scholarly project they would pursue during their tenure of a Visiting Fellowship, and of the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford.
How to Apply
Applications must be submitted online by 12 noon (UK time), Friday, 4 September 2015. The online system will contact the applicant’s two referees once the application has been submitted, but the College relies upon applicants to ensure that referees are familiar with the details of their proposed scholarly project and that references are received by Friday, 11 September 2015 at the latest. The College cannot itself undertake to remind referees of the deadline but, once submitted, an applicant may log-in to check whether their referees have sent in the reference. In the event of need to change an application after submission, please contact the Fellows’ Secretary.
Applicants will need to upload:
- an up-to-date curriculum vitae;
- a list of publications;
- a research proposal (up to 1,000 words); and
- if you are seeking a financial subvention, a letter of explanation.
