Newman Fellowship in Paediatric Rheumatology

As part of its programme to provide postdoctoral research opportunities for scholars of proven academic excellence, University College Dublin is pleased to announce a Newman Fellowship in Paediatric Rheumatology. This Newman Fellowship is established with the generous support of AbbVie, SOBI and Nordic Pharma. The Newman Fellow will be based in the UCD School of Medicine and the UCD Conway Institute.

This project aims to look at the molecular pathogenesis of chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO), a rare autoinflammatory bone disease predominantly affecting children and adolescents. The current project (led by Prof. Gerry Wilson, UCD Centre for Arthritis Research) and Dr Orla Killeen (Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist, Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin) will examine if there is an association between genetic variants found in patients with CNO, the bone biopsy findings and disease severity. This project is seeking a fellow with experience in next-generation sequencing variant prioritisation and paediatrics.

The AbbVie SOBI Nordic Pharma Newman Fellow will hold a high honours degree in a biological sciences or biomedical sciences subject and be expected to have completed higher specialist training in paediatrics. The successful applicant will have demonstrated a commitment to the field of Paediatric Rheumatology and will have published in high impact journals (commensurate with their level of research experience). The candidate must demonstrate their experience in associated research methodology including appropriate bioinformatic experience and will show an interest in next-generation sequencing and autoinflammatory diseases.

The AbbVie SOBI Nordic Pharma Newman Fellowship comes with a generous stipend and is tenable for two years. Informal enquiries regarding this Fellowship may be directed to Professor Gerry Wilson, (gerry.wilson@ucd.ie) at the UCD Centre for Arthritis Research.
