Armenian Studies means different things to different people. This conference aims to bring scholars of diverse time periods in this field into conversation with one another for reciprocal enrichment. We welcome graduate student projects that explore the mutually constitutive relationship between ancient and modern Armenian culture. Each paper should grapple with intersecting elements of both past and present. In the spirit of collaborative cooperation, invited faculty members will also foster mentorship within the field of Armenian Studies by participating actively in panel discussion.
Questions to consider might include (but are not limited to):
- How can knowledge of Classical and Middle Armenian enrich the study and instruction of modern Armenian?
- How might the presence (or loss) of ancient physical structures and archeological sites affect the contemporary Armenian psyche?
- What happens to artifacts from the ancient Armenian world when they are taken out of their context of creation centuries later?
- How are myths, symbols, characters, and stories from Armenia’s history revivified and redeployed by modern authors?
- How can modern theories of economics be used to explain geopolitical shifts in the ancient Armenian kingdoms?
- How might studying ancient Armenian art inform modern art criticism?
- What can the challenges to and accomplishments of the contemporary Armenian Church reveal about the durability, continuity, and individuality of ancient Apostolic theology?
- How do performances of traditional folk songs and dances reflect patterns of Armenian migration, resistance, and assimilation?
- How does a quest to study the ancient Armenian past demand evolution in modern technology?
Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and applications should be uploaded to CARAT by December 15th. Non-Harvard applicants should create an XID account in order to access CARAT. Results will be announced by January 15th, and completed papers must be submitted for discussant review by March 15th. Limited travel funding may be available for accepted participants.
