Program Description

The summer school offers a possibility to gain knowledge on the up-to-date research in borderlands studies. It will provide young researchers and practitioners with an opportunity to present their projects, participate in public events and discussions, and join an international network of scholars in this multidisciplinary field.

The concept of “borderlands” implies demarcation of space and contact – both physical and imagined. Borderlands studies reveal not only connections in a fragmented world but also the divisions and inequalities generated by heterogeneities such as class, gender, ethnicity, legal status, religion, language, narratives, historical memory, etc. As such, “transient borderlands” have a complicated history of belongings and identities, conflicts and coexistence. The school will concentrate on the impact of state policies, nationalism, population movements, and geopolitical changes on borderland regions. Particular attention will be paid to the cases of recent conflicts and their influence on borderland populations. Focused primarily on Ukraine, the summer school will provide a complex comparative framework of borderlands in East Central Europe and the Black Sea Region.

Three main courses will give students insight on borderlands studies from historical, sociological, and memory studies perspectives. Guest lectures will be divided into two modules: “Borders and boundaries in East Central Europe and the Black Sea Region”, and “Conflicts, societies, and “internal borders”. The summer school format combines lectures, seminars, city walks, and public events.
