Athens Photo Festival 2018 attempts to bring together a range of different perspectives from emerging and established artists and photographers from all over the world with the aim to raise awareness and foster an understanding of contemporary culture and society through photography in all its forms.Exploring critical issues relevant to our times, the festival functions as a dynamic platform where the social impact of the ever-changing visual culture can be raised and discussed. Athens, today, is the city facing the challenges for Europe. This put us in a unique position to collaborate with international artists and organisations.

The Festival works within an international, national and local context, encompassing a variety of activities designed to reflect the diversity of contemporary photographic practices, and to create opportunities for exchange of ideas, artistic expression and international engagement.The 2018 main exhibitions take place from 6 June to 29 July 2018, at the Benaki Museum (Pireos St. Annexe). The main exhibition programme will be comprised of a curated selection of over 100 entries, selected through the current international open call for submissions. This call is open to all exhibitions of photography and lens-based works, ranging from fine art to documentary and photojournalism, photo-based installations and multimedia. To be eligible for inclusion in Festival programming, proposals must be submitted before 31 March, 2018. At the core of the festival is a range of events, including portfolio viewings, screenings, talks and discussions, workshops, and various community and participatory projects. In addition to the main venue-based programme, the festival encourages community involvement through satellite exhibitions in various locations in the city.Athens Photo Festival is a member of the European Month of Photography (EMoP), a network comprised of photography festivals in 8 European capitals that aims to foster collaboration on joint projects within a European framework.

International Call for Submissions

Athens Photo Festival is accepting submissions for the 2018 exhibition programme. The selected works will be presented from 6 June to 29 July 2018, at the Benaki Museum (Pireos St. Annexe), one of the most prestigious museums in Greece. The main exhibition programme will be comprised of a wide variety of works, selected through the current international open call for submissions. This call is open for all genres of photography: from fine art to documentary and photojournalism, photo-based installations and multimedia. The Festival also welcomes submissions for its Photobook Show. To be eligible for inclusion in Festival programming, proposals must be submitted before 4 April, 2018.

EXHIBITIONS

The Festival welcomes submissions from artists/photographers, collectives and curators for its Exhibition Programme. The exhibition programme will be comprised of a curated selection of over 100 entries, selected through the current international open call for submissions.

PHOTOBOOK SHOW

In recognition of the increasing importance of the photobook within contemporary photographic practice, the Festival will present an exhibition dedicated to the form of book and invites artists and publishers worldwide to submit their self-published books for consideration.

    Under the motto “We Speak Photography”, Photo Voices is designed as a set of short talks to share thought provoking images and words.
  • Labs
    Educational programmes offer intensive learning experiences for current and future generations of artists and photography enthusiasts.
  • Screenings
    This one night event brings together multiple perspectives on the use of images –both moving and still– in contemporary culture.
  • Photography as Performance
    Experimenting with the ways through which performance and photography can cross boundaries and create interesting hybrids.
  • Athens Photo Marathon
    Over 1.000 contestants will participate in a “photography marathon”, by recording through their own lens, four given subjects inspired by the urban life and its experience.

There are two ways in which you may submit:

What does my submission fee include?

• Submission to the 2018 Festival for exhibition programming consideration.
• Contribution to the production cost of the works included in the Main Programme.
• Accommodation for the international guests for two nights.
• 20 finalists will have the opportunity to participate for free to the International Portfolio Reviews in Athens.
• 100 finalists will have the opportunity for a 6-month presence on APhF:Connections, a dedicated by-invitation-only platform to showcase their work as well as introduce them to 100+ influential industry professionals from all around the world, who are always willing to discover ‘new’ photography from emerging or established artists. This is a non-official section, independent of the Festival’s curatorial team.

Entry Fee

Entry fee is 20 € per submission. Each applicant may submit up to three entries of up to 20 photographs per submission.
