Call for applications to CAS Oslo

The Centre for Advanced Study (CAS Oslo), Norway’s only institute for excellence in interdisciplinary fundamental research, is now accepting project proposals for the 2020/21 academic year. Deadline: 15 January 2018.

CAS Oslo’s primary objective is to strengthen fundamental research by providing outstanding scholars with the opportunity to collaborate on projects across disciplinary and national boundaries.

Each year, CAS Oslo hosts three interdisciplinary research groups working within the fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The groups comprise leading academics from around the world and are led by eminent scholars affiliated with CAS Oslo’s partner institutions in Norway.

Group leaders assemble their research groups from among national and international colleagues. Each group receives a NOK 3.5 million grant, and scholars affiliated with CAS Oslo’s partner institutions are granted sabbatical leave during their residency.

CAS Oslo offers a unique research infrastructure and service platform, including apartments for visiting scholars, event support, IT and library services, and more.

How to apply

To apply, group leader candidates must submit a project proposal (3-6 pages) containing:

  • Information about the group leader(s), including name(s), current workplace(s), relevant publications, involvement in the field concerned, and relevant group leadership experience (1-2 pages)
  • A brief project description detailing the project’s central issues, originality, and academic importance in relation to the international research front in the field (2-4 pages)

Successful applicants will:

  • Clearly demonstrate their commitment to scholarly excellence
  • Pitch innovative fundamental research projects that emphasize interdisciplinary and international collaboration

Note:

  • Each project can have no more than two group leaders
  • Group leader candidates must be employed in a permanent research position at one of CAS Oslo’s partner institutions
  • Group leader candidates must inform the department or institute chair about the project proposal
  • The project proposal will be assessed by people with extensive research experience but who are not necessarily experts in the applicants’ fields
  • It is not necessary to deliver budget proposals at this stage of the process

Deadline for submissions: 15 January 2018.

The selection process

CAS Oslo’s Board of Directors will in February 2018 determine which of the submitted proposals will proceed to the next round. At that point, group leader candidates will be asked to draw up a full project description for a second round of evaluation. The project description at this stage must also include an overview of relevant Norwegian and international scholars interested in a residency at CAS Oslo.

It is essential that the group has a strong international presence and that it consists of high-profile scholars with international publications, as well as up to two promising postdoctoral or Ph.D. students.

Scientific merit is the only criterion used in CAS Oslo's evaluation process, which includes an extensive international peer review. The final selection of the three projects will be announced in September 2018. CAS Oslo will assist group leaders during the two-year planning phase leading up to the year in residency.
