Our doctoral program is conducted in English. If you are not a native English speaker we require a proof of your proficiency (equivalent to CEFR B2/C1) in English. Please upload in the space below either a TOEFL or an IELTS certificate or an UNIcert II/III certificate. The minimum score for the TOEFL internet-based test (TOEFL® iBT) is 95. For IELTS the overall band score should be 6.5. Knowledge of German is not a prerequisite for studying at the School. We would, however, like to know your proficiency (if any) in the language.

In some cases, exceptions may be made for candidates with a profound knowledge of English who cannot afford a TOEFL or IELTS certificate. For further information, please contact the SALSA office (salsa@hu-berlin.de).

4. Education:

In order to be considered as an applicant for the School, you must have completed (or be in the process of completing) a Master’s degree, Diplom, Staatsexamen, Magister or the equivalent in a field related to analytical sciences research, e.g. chemistry, physics, biology, natural sciences education (didactics), or analytical sciences.

(1) List your college/university degrees in chronological order, starting with the latest degree. Please also list degrees that have not been completed yet with an expected date of completion. Please provide official certificates as well as transcripts in English or German and certified translations for certificates and transcripts in any other language. For degrees that have not been completed yet, please provide progress grade reports and/or transcripts.

(2) Please also provide an abstract of your Master’s thesis in English, also if your thesis is not completed yet. Please do not upload your complete Master thesis!

5. Research Experience:

Description of prior research experience, publications, posters and oral presentations, teaching experience, disciplinary background.

6. Personal statement of motivation:

Please present and discuss your academic and career objectives including your motivation for participation in the school and illustrate your interest in analytical sciences. Please note that we will anonymize applications for the first of several review sessions, so please do not include any personal details as regards your name, gender, age or origin in your statement of motivation.

7. Self-assessment of scientific accomplishments:

Please classify and discuss your own thesis work (Master thesis, Diploma thesis or equivalent) in a broad scientific context.

8. Preferred potential doctoral project and supervisors:

Each doctoral research project will be supervised by two experienced advisors. Up to 3 preferred potential doctoral projects can be selected from a list. Please refer to research to learn more about the research complexes of SALSA and to faculty to learn more about the specific expertise of your potential supervisors. As soon as you have registered via the online application tool, you will also be able to view a list of project abstracts.

9. Letters of Reference:

Two letters of reference will be needed! Please send our guidelines for recommendation letters to your two referees. Your referees will have to send their letters of reference either as an original to the SALSA office or as a scan attachment via their personal email account (to salsa@hu-berlin.de). We do NOT accept letters of reference sent in by applicants, so please do not upload any additional letters! You will have to enter the names and affiliations of your referees into our database during the online application process.
