University of Oslo Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Modeling of Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions, Norway

Publish Date: Jun 20, 2016

Deadline: Jul 04, 2016

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Modeling of Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in modeling of aerosol-cloud-climate interactions is open at The Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Requirements

A 2-year position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is vacant within modeling of aerosol-cloud-climate interactions at the Section of Meteorology and Oceanography. The position is funded by the European FP7 research project BACCHUS (“Impact of Biogenic versus Anthropogenic emissions on Clouds and Climate: towards a Holistic UnderStanding“). The starting date should be as soon as possible.

The objective of the planned research is to improve estimates of the influence of natural and anthropogenic aerosols on clouds, and thereby on climate. The main tool for the research will be the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM). In collaboration with other researchers in BACCHUS, the model’s parameterizations of certain aerosol-cloud processes will be improved, and the model performance evaluated through comparisons between model results and observations. NorESM will then be used to investigate climate feedbacks and to provide future climate predictions using anthropogenic emission scenarios. The candidate is expected to participate in and be able to lead the writing of scientific papers dealing with the results obtained.

Qualifications

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

A formal requirement for the position is a Ph.D. degree or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in meteorology, oceanography or related areas. In addition, the candidates must have good programming skills and experience with Linux/UNIX environments. Other required qualifications are the ability to work in a team and experience in writing scientific papers, also as first author.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines. Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for academic positions.

A good command of English is required.

The Section of Meteorology and Oceanography at the Department of Geosciences carries out research on various physical, dynamical and chemical aspects of the climate system, often in the context of climate change. Important tools in this research are e.g. earth system models, regional atmospheric models and advanced satellite data.

Salary

Position code 1352, Pay Grade: 57 – 65 (NOK 483 700 – 560 700 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority).

The application must include:

  • An application letter
