The Foreign Press Center Japan (FPCJ), a non-profit organization that supports foreign journalists in their coverage of Japan, in cooperation with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), will be sponsoring a Fellowship tour to Japan for sports a journalist from the U.S. The Fellowship allow a sports journalist to learn firsthand about media coverage focusing on women in sports in Japan and enhance his/her global perspectives. Highlights of the fellowship include visits to companies, training facilities, and universities, and meetings with leading figures and athletes in each field. In addition, some aspects of the program can be arranged according to the journalist’s interests, with the assistance of the FPCJ.
About program
This fellowship program is designed for a U.S.-based journalist and consists of a 6-day reporting trip, including participation in an international symposium: Role of the Media in Creating Positive Change and Opportunities for Women in Sports.
The objective of the symposium is to discuss how the media can help create an environment for better performance and greater achievements by female athletes.
The selected fellow is expected to be able to highlight innovative practices by the American media on women in sports, and how media can bring a focus on this issue. The fellow is also encouraged to share his/her views with the panel and audience on why female athletes face barriers when pursuing a career.
During this fellowship, the FPCJ will organize visits to companies, universities, and training facilities to cover a variety of aspects of women’s sports in Japan. Through international media coverage focusing on women in sports, we aim to promote public awareness of this issue globally.
Program Schedule (subject to change)
- October 2, 2016: Arrival in Tokyo.

October 3, 2016: Program orientation at FPCJ. Briefing on equality in sports in Japan by Dr. Etsuko Ogasawara, Executive Director of Japanese Center for Research on Women in Sport/Professor of Sport Management, Juntendo University.

October 4, 2016: Coverage 1: What support is there for high-level female athletes? Visits will be arranged to: Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC), National Training Center Self-Defense Force Physical Training School, Nippon Sport Science University etc.
- October 5, 2016: Visit to companies that support female athletes.
- October 6, 2016: Welcome luncheon, symposium and reception.

October 7, 2016: Coverage 2: Second career of female athletes. Visit to a company that hires female former Olympians and top athletes.
- October 8, 2016: Return to (arrive on the same date) the U.S.
Expenses
In principle, the FPCJ will cover the following expenses for the fellowship journalist:
- Return discount economy-class air tickets to and from Tokyo by the most direct route available.
- Accommodation costs for the fellowship duration (breakfast included).
- Per-diem (¥4,000 per day).
- Return bus fare to and from Narita Airport and hotel in Tokyo.
- If traveling out of Tokyo to a city which is over 100km one-way by Japan Railway’s calculation, transportation expenses to and from Tokyo and that city.
- Interpreters and escorts for your reporting.
- Insurance for the duration of the fellowship.
Expenses other than those mentioned above will be paid by the fellow, using the per-diem mentioned above and the fellow’s own money. Examples include:
- Meals and drinks.
- Communication expenses.
- Transportation costs within the city where the fellow is staying.
- Laundry.
Qualifications and Selection Procedure
Working print, broadcast, and online journalists are encouraged to apply. Applications from sports reporters are accepted. Applicant will need to have a minimum of three years of experience as a journalist. Previous travel to Japan is not a requirement; nor is the ability to speak Japanese.
Guidelines for Application
All applications must include the following documents:
- Program application form.
- A cover letter indicating your experience as journalist and your interest in the program.
- A list of story angles that you are interested in pursuing and that would be published/broadcast by your media organization.

- Samples of work relevant to the program themes – either news clippings or broadcast work provided on a DVD or memory stick.
