About the fellowship 

A position for a doctoral candidate working in Elo and Lahesmaa Laboratories is open for applications. We are looking for a highly creative and motivated graduate student in Bioinformatics who is interested in Molecular Systems Immunology, T cell epigenomics and molecular mechanisms of immune mediated diseases. Successful applicant will join Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence at Turku Centre for Biotechnology, BioCity Turku, Turku, Finland and will be co-supervised by Dr. Laura Elo, Research Director in Bioinformatics and Dr. Riitta Lahesmaa, Academy professor at Turku Centre for Biotechnology, University of Turku, Finland.

The work of the graduate student involves development and application of computational and statistical methods for the analysis of high-throughput molecular data, with a focus on next generation sequencing data and their combination with other omics data. Particular objectives are detection of biomarkers for immune mediated diseases as well as unraveling the underlying molecular mechanisms.  

Turku Centre for Biotechnology is a joint department of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, providing high-end technologies and expertise to academic and industrial researchers and a stimulating multidisciplinary and international research environment.

The position is for three years, starting from April 1, 2017. Starting date is negotiable. The salary is in accordance with the universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 2-3 where the work specific salary component is 1985.85–2181.44 €/month. In addition, there is a share increase based on the personal performance, which is, at most, 46.3 % of the base salary. There is a trial period of four months.

Qualifications

Successful applicants have:

  • A relevant M.Sc. degree (e.g. bioinformatics, computational biology, mathematics)
  • Previous experience in next generation sequencing, epigenomic and genomic research and related analysis platforms and tools.
  • General knowledge in bioinformatics, statistics and R, Matlab or other mathematical/statistical software
  • High level of motivation, self-initiative and independency
  • Excellent team work and communication skills in English (both oral and written)
  • Previous experience in immunology is considered an advantage
