American Geographical Society Library Fellowship for MSI Scholars

This is a one time, short-term fellowship intended to support individuals whose research would benefit from extensive use of the AGS Library and who wish to communicate their geographical research results to a broad, educated general audience. The funding for this opportunity comes from a US Department of Education National Resource Center grant and is intended to support faculty or PhD students from minority serving institutions.

The American Geographical Society Library is one of the premier collections of its kind in North America, containing over 1.3 million items including maps, atlases, books, periodicals, film media and digital data files with strengths in geography, cartography and related historical topics. In addition, researchers benefit from access to the UWM Libraries print and online collections during their residency. Please note that not all AGS Library materials are listed in the online catalog, but finding aids and professional staff are available to assist in determining if resources in the AGSL are suitable for a given research project.

Research projects supported by the Fellowship program must fall within the wide range of subject areas that could be supported by the Library’s collections. Examples include area studies, discovery and exploration, history of cartography, history of geographical thought, historical geography and geographical themes with a significant historical component, and any topic that would have policy, business or similar applications.

Awards of $600* per week for periods up to four-weeks will be provided to help defray the travel and living expenses relative to their research visit, at the conclusion of their residency.

The grantee is expected to be in residence during the term of the award, which may be taken up any time of the year. On the conclusion of his or her tenure, fellows will be expected to submit short written reports on their research and to make acknowledgment of the Fellowship program in any publication, report or dissertation issuing wholly or in part from the AGSL Fellowship. Recipients of this fellowship program will have the added responsibility to publish their research for the benefit of a broad, educated general audience.

Eligibility:

Candidates for Fellowships should be established scholars, doctoral students who have completed degree requirements and are at the stage of writing their dissertations, individuals with a record of publication in accord with the fellowship program, or those with government or business ties who could use the Library’s resources to further policy studies.

To Apply:

Application must be made in writing to the AGSL. The application shall include:

  • a two-page letter describing the project to be pursued, the proposed end result of the project (including publication venue), and an explanation of how the AGS Library will be utilized in completing the project;
  • a brief curriculum vitae;
  • and a letter of support from a reputable scholar, business leader or public official.

Electronic submission is encouraged. Applications may be submitted via email or by post (email: bidney@uwm.edu; post: Marcy Bidney, Curator, AGS Library, UWM Libraries, 2311 E. Hartford Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53211). The awards will be made by the UWM Director of Libraries, based on recommendations from an advisory committee.
