Scripps Howard Foundation Journalism Fellowship Program 2018, USA

Journalism Fellowship

The Scripps Howard Foundation is taking applications for its 12-month fellowship program, offered in conjunction with the Scripps News Washington Bureau/Newsy and ProPublica.

The program, which starts in June 2018, is a paid opportunity for postgraduates looking to kick start their journalism career. Your degree does not have to be in journalism to be considered. We are looking for people with a demonstrated passion and commitment to journalism, and a desire to become a future leader in the industry.

Today's fellows will be tomorrow's journalism leaders

We all know the Internet has changed journalism. And it’s not just the business models. It has also helped spawn new ways of reporting and new forms of storytelling. For journalism to flourish, the leaders of tomorrow’s newsrooms will need to understand and take advantage of the new ways of doing it all. That means data, crowdsourcing, multimedia, and no doubt forms we haven’t yet landed on. Nobody can be an expert in it all. But deep exposure to the tools is crucial. As are the management skills to meld them all together.

That’s why we’ve created the Scripps Howard Fellowship Program. It’s an intensive, 12-month program with the goal of developing a diverse pool of talented, young journalists who will have the foundational skills for future leadership. Starting in June, fellows will work at either Scripps News Washington Bureau/Newsy or ProPublica, focusing on developing expertise in one specialty, while being exposed to all the components of the newsroom.

The fellows will come together on three occasions for sessions on career management, leadership/collaboration and the business of journalism/entrepreneurship.

Here are the tracks you can choose to apply in:

Investigative Reporting (offered both at ProPublica and Scripps/Newsy)
Journalism is still about telling people something they didn’t know. Having the skills to find that information and synthesize into a compelling story is as crucial as ever. You’ll work with some of the best investigative journalists in the business to find important accountability stories, report them, and tell them in video and audio and text at the Scripps Washington Bureau/Newsy and ProPublica.

Engagement Reporting (at ProPublica)
ProPublica has developed a deep expertise in cultivating communities to fuel its journalism. (Yes, that’s really a thing.) Engagement can often be a euphemism for simply social media. This is about much more than that. ProPublica uses the tools of the Internet and communities to fuel reporting. You’ll be working with ProPublica’s engagement team and reporters throughout ProPublica to report and produce powerful, hard-hitting journalism.

Data Reporting (at ProPublica)
ProPublica is a leader in using data to tell important stories, uncover hidden issues and empower readersto investigate their own lives. You’ll be a key member of the data team, assisting with the conception and execution of the data-driven investigations ProPublica is known for. You’ll gain experience in collecting, cleaning, evaluating and analyzing data for news stories; proficiently use data analysis languages such as SQL and R; and learn how to bulletproof and spot-check your data to ensure accuracy.

Multimedia storytelling (at Scripps/Newsy and ProPublica)
Creating stories for an audience across major social and non-linear platforms is at the heart of what Newsy does daily and in long form documentary series and a hunger to create something new. You’ll work with video reporters, editors and producers – data journalists and an audio team to develop interviewing skills, writing for the eye and the ear and helping gather and evaluate databases to identify patterns and find the story within the data.

Newsroom 360 The journalism at the Scripps Washington Bureau/Newsy is built from the ground up – idea by idea, story by story. You’ll work with a variety of teams and learn how to hone your pitches, develop sources, interview and build your skills reporting and writing short, medium and long-form stories across platforms. From text to broadcast, digital video to podcasting, breaking news to investigative, you’ll be exercising all your journalism muscles as part of a large newsroom creating a diversity of stories.

We’re looking for applicants who:

  1. Can demonstrate their potential in their preferred specialty. That can mean having previous work in the area, or having a deep understanding of it
  2. Are committed to telling stories about abuses of power
  3. Are excited about all the ways we can do journalism nowadays: from deep data-digging, to working with readers, viewers and listeners to marrying narrative and investigative forms
  4. Really likes working with others. Many in newsrooms have their own superpowers, whether it’s sourcing, document-diving, data, engagement or design. The best work is often together.

We know there are great candidates who won’t fit everything we’ve described above, or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are dedicated to improving our newsrooms, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. Everyone is encouraged to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
