About the fellowship
The East-West Center is pleased to invite applications for the 2017 - 2018 Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellowship (APLP). The APLP is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region and a signature program of the East West Center.
Currently celebrating its 16th anniversary, the APLP has created a network of 581 dynamic leaders in 58 countries who are helping to build a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community.
Program description
The APLP seeks outstanding individuals from all walks of life (government, business, NGOs, health sciences, media, monastic orders, and education) to participate in an innovative leadership development program at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The average age of an APLP Fellow is 33, with an average of 5 - 8 years of professional experience prior to entering the program.
All fellows live on the East-West Center's campus in Honolulu, Hawaii from August through December 2017 for the residential portion of the program. From January – April 2018, the program is run virtually [online] and fellows have the option to return to their home countries or apply for extended fieldwork in Southeast Asia, internships, self-designed projects and employment experiences.
Application and scholarship instrictions
Upon acceptance, all participants receive a fellowship valued at approximately $13,000 USD to cover a majority of the program costs. Substantial scholarship funding is available for the remainder of the costs of participation, though timing is critical. The earlier an application is submitted, the greater the chance that scholarship funds will be available to support participant costs beyond the fellowship provisions. Scholarship requests and APLP Fellowship applications are due by March 1, 2017.
Eligibility
The APLP Fellowship is intended for any individual with a deep interest in leadership training and a demonstrated commitment to promoting peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region - regardless of citizenship, age or ethnicity. All citizenships are welcome to apply. Anyone who meets the minimum criteria is eligible to apply. There are no age restrictions in the APLP. In fact, the APLP has had participants as old as 52 years of age.
Financial Assistance
Regarding the supplemental costs of participation in the APLP (accommodation, living expenses etc.), a number of East-West Center funding opportunities are available. However, these supplemental scholarships are competitive and require submission of a completed Request for Scholarships form. Supplemental funds are awarded based on merit, proven need, program goals (such as diversity), and scholarship availability. Priority is given to the residency period in Hawai’i, as well as supporting participants from under-represented countries in the Asia Pacific region in line with the mission of the EWC. Almost all supplemental awards are partial scholarships.
All APLP fellows are encouraged to find their own funding. In the past, the majority of APLP participants have been partially or fully funded by employers, government agencies, NGOs, fellowships, minority scholarships, and other external sources, including sponsors and family support; or participants have been self-funded.
Only after we review your application, and if you are accepted into the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP), do we then award supplemental scholarships.
