PhD Candidate in neuroscience/neuroplasticity
One position as PhD Candidate is available for a period of 3 years in the field of neuroscience/neuroplasticity at the Laboratory of Neural Development and Optical Recording (NDEVOR) at the University of Oslo, Faculty of Medicine, under the supervision of Professor Joel Glover.
The position will involve the study of perineuronal nets (PNNs) in the context of adaptive plasticity following spinal cord injury. The Glover lab (NDEVOR) has a research focus on brain and spinal cord development and regeneration, consists of a highly international research team of postdocs, PhD candidates, and undergraduates and boasts state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, particularly in optical recording techniques. The lab is fully funded by extramural grants and the advertised position is financed by the Norwegian Research Council. Glover is also head of the Norwegian Center for Stem Cell Research and has numerous human stem cell-based projects relevant to spinal cord injury. Description
The candidate will use a variety of molecular and cellular techniques to study the role of PNNs in the regulation of synaptogenesis by mammalian and human neurons following spinal cord injury. The project is part of a larger effort to understand the mechanisms of adaptive plasticity in the injured spinal cord and to use this understanding to develop strategies for promoting the regeneration of functionally appropriate connections in spinal cord injury patients. The candidate will be working within a large and active research group, and will interact closely with other lab members using molecular, anatomical, electrophysiological, optical and optogenetic approaches to this problem.
The objective of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The appointment is conditional upon admission to the research-training programme of the Faculty of Medicine. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than one month after taking up the position, and admission approved within three months. The research fellow is expected to complete the project within the set fellowship period.
Requirements
Applicants must have a MA degree equivalent to a Norwegian MA or an equivalent degree in advanced biology, with experience in laboratory work and either an existing background in neuroscience or a strong motivation to pursue research in neuroscience. Applicants must have the skills and motivation required to work with live neural tissue (eye-hand coordination involved in tissue dissection and handling, neuronal labelling, and cell culture), and must be willing to work on in vivo systems. Experience in developmental neuroscience, and in particular neural plasticity, will be considered positively.
Potential candidates must be enthusiastic, strongly motivated, well-organised, able to take the initiative in a project, and to work independently as well as in a team.
