Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) of Multilingualism in Education

A permanent full-time position as Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) (SKO 1011) in the field of Multilingualism in Education (flerspråklighet i opplæringen) is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research (ILS). The teaching of Multilingualism in Education covers several areas, including teaching and learning in the multilingual classroom, language and literacy practices of newly arrived as well as of other multilingual students, and policy and practice in multilingual education.

The position will be linked to the teacher education programmes at ILS (full-time and part-time undergraduate teacher training programme (PPU) and PPU in the graduate teacher training programme (LeP)), to the master level in LeP, and to the PhD programme. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the department’s research through participation in one of the research groups; Studies of Instruction across Subjects and Competences (SISCO) and Teacher Professionalism and Educational Change; Practices, Purposes, Policies (TEPEC), or in one of the other research groups at the faculty. Contribution to the efforts of ProTed, Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education is expected as well.

Description:

  • Promote the development of Multilingualism in Education through research, publication of academic work nationally and internationally, and participation in national and international networks.
  • Participate in planning, teaching and supervision in the field of Multilingualism in Education in teacher education programmes, and contribute to the development of the educational quality of the programmes.
  • Administrative tasks
  • Contribute to the efforts of ProTed, Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education
  • Contribute to research dissemination targeted at both professional actors and the general public

Qualifications:

  • The applicant must be able to document research competence linked to the field of Multilingualism in Education. The minimum competence requirement for the position of associate professor is a PhD in areas relevant for the field  of Multilingualism in Education
  • Scientific papers and expertise in the field of Multilingualism in Education
  • Experience from the Norwegian or Scandinavian education sector (schools grade 8-13, and/or teacher training for grade 8-13)
  • Basic teaching competence
  • Documented knowledge of and familiarity with the Norwegian or the Scandinavian educational systems
  • Advanced spoken and written proficiency in Norwegian and English
  • Personal suitability and motivation


In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications will be considered, including the applicant’s ability to communicate and personal suitability. Emphasis will also be placed on the applicant’s experience and ability to attract research funding from external sources.

Applicants who on appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic teaching competence must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years. Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment.
