Nationalism Studies Program was established by Central European University with the aim of engaging students in an empirical and theoretical study of issues of nationalism, self-determination, problems of state-formation, ethnic conflict, minority protection and the related theme of globalization. Drawing upon the uniquely supranational milieu of Central European University, the program encourages a critical and non-sectarian study of nationalism.

Students with previous studies in all fields of humanities and social sciences (including philosophy, sociology, anthropology, history, political science, psychology, languages, journalism, public policy) are welcome to apply.

MA Entry Requirements:

1. Completed online CEU Application Form

2. Letters of recommendation

3. Academic records

4. A full curriculum vitae or resume, including a list of publications, if any

5. Proof of English proficiency

In addition to meeting the general CEU admissions requirements for the Nationalism Studies Program, applicants should submit:

- a 500 word outline of their proposed research topic
- a writing sample, e.g. a term paper of minimum ten pages

General Application Deadlines

  • February 4, 2016*:
    Application deadline for master's candidates requesting financial aid, for PhD and SJD candidates, and for CEU-administered entry exams (CEU-administered TOEFL; program-specific exams where applicable).
  • May 3, 2016*:
    Application deadline for self-financing master's candidates.
    All applications submitted by the May 3 deadline must be complete with any applicable standard test score reports (TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, etc.).

Special Application Deadlines

  • January 11, 2016 (1 PM CET / 4 AM PST):
    Deadline for candidates to the Mundus MAPP program applying for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. Applications must be complete with English test scores wherever applicable.
  • May 3, 2016*:
    Deadline for all candidates to the MATILDA program.
    Deadline to apply for master's tuition awards at the Departments of History and Environmental Sciences & Policy.
    All applications submitted by the May 3 deadline must be complete with any applicable standard test score reports (TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, etc.).
