Department of History at Central European University

The Department of History is a thriving part of Central European University (CEU), the only transnational, English-language graduate school in Europe that is accredited both on the Continent (in Hungary) and in the United States.

The transnational academic environment challenges our faculty and students to study the past and present using the most innovative methodologies and theoretical frameworks from a global perspective, and to work closely together and learn from one another in order to produce new knowledge and ground-breaking research.

Our department brings together related teaching units (Medieval Studies Department, the Nationalism Studies Program) and research centers (Open Society Archives, Pasts, Inc., Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies, the Center for Religious Studies and the Jewish Studies Program). It provides an excellent academic gateway to the history of Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. We offer a unique intellectual environment that encourages a comparative and interdisciplinary study of these regions in relation to each other as well as to other parts of the world. Our department offers one of the few programs in the world that effectively enables students to study comparatively the Habsburg, Romanov, and Ottoman Empires and their successor states, engaging with a variety of social, political, and cultural issues.

The Department of History owes its versatility and global outlook mostly to its multi-national, cosmopolitan, and multilingual faculty and student body, whose current members come from Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Japan, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United States, and elsewhere.

Our department has attracted an ever-growing number of graduate students from all over the world. We are proud that our alumni are pursuing successful carriers in academic and professional fields or continuing their PhD education in the leading universities of Europe and the USA. At our department students find an environment that encourages them to develop independent, innovative, and critical open minds, based on rigorous training of analytical skills and uses of sources and archival materials. Virtually all our students receive grants, fellowships, as well as other forms of needs- and merit-based financial assistance.

Budapest is an exciting place for study. Central European University holds the largest English-language research library in the region, while the city offers a number of important libraries and archives. It lies at the crossroads of Europe, and is in close physical proximity to major centers for historical research such as Bucharest, Vienna, Kraków, Munich, Zagreb, Venice, and Istanbul, to name but a few. Intellectual discussion and cultural life continue after class lets out as well. CEU frequently hosts talks by distinguished visitors as well as international conferences and workshops, and conversations between students and faculty go on in our hallways and in the many public spaces and cafés that surround the university.
