PhD Candidate in Teaching English or Norwegian Vocational Education

A position as research fellow is vacant at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research in the subject areas Teaching English or Teaching Norwegian (in Norwegian: “engelsk eller norsk fagdidaktikk”) in vocational education. The research fellow will be expected to pursue educational issues relevant for the teaching and learning of English or Norwegian in Norwegian vocational school settings, grades 11-13.

The department particularly welcomes research proposals on the adaption of the common core subjects English or Norwegian in vocational education (in Norwegian “yrkesretting”).

The present position is affiliated with the research group TEPEC (Teacher Professionalism and Educational Change: Practices, Purposes, Policies).

Positions as research fellows are fixed-term educational posts where the aim is that the research fellow completes a doctoral degree (PhD) during the period of employment. A prerequisite for employment is admission to the Faculty’s doctoral degree programme, and the applicants’ formal and other qualifications for admission will therefore be assessed. The doctoral candidate is expected to participate actively in the organized research training and in the Faculty’s research community.

The appointment is made for a period of up to four years (25 % of which is devoted to required duties, usually in the form of teaching activities). The appointment can have a more limited scope due to similar previous employment in academic positions.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculty’s PhD programme. This normally includes:

  • Documented successful completion of

- a Master's degree program (normally equivalent to a Norwegian two years' MA degree/ECTS 120 credits), or

- a similar higher education program,

in both cases with thesis, and within relevant and accepted subject areas.

  • Documented result of the masters' degree required: Minimum grade B or equivalent (ECTS grading scale) including the grade on the thesis.

The application may be written in English or Norwegian. 
The application for a research fellowship in Teaching Norwegian may be in Norwegian.

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be put on:

  • The applicant’s academic aptitude with regard to completing the research training program.
  • The quality of the research proposal in terms of a project description.
  • The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the post, including his/her ability to collaborate and to form part of a cross-disciplinary academic community.
  • Other qualifications that meet the objectives, including relevant teaching experience, which in departments of teacher education normally forms the basis of this type of post. Excellent English language skills are required for a project in Teaching English.

 Familiarity with the Norwegian school system and experience in Teaching English or Norwegian in vocational education in Norway will be considered an asset, as will a completed teacher education degree.
