Newcastle - Singapore Studentships 2017

In partnership with NUS (National University Singapore), NTU (Nanyang Technological University Singapore) and A*Star Singapore, the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE) is inviting applications from talented students who have, or expect to receive, a good Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and who have a real passion for research.

We are offering 5 four-year PhD scholarships to a value of £20,000 per year (£80,000 in total).

The scholarships cover tuition fees and a stipend (at the UK RCUK rate) plus a return trip to Singapore every year. Scholarships are open to UK/EU and international applicants.

Projects NSS1712, NSS1719 & NSS1720 will be based permanently in Singapore at our Newcastle University Campus (NUIS) so students must be willing to relocate to Singapore for the main duration of their studies.

Opportunities to visit UK supervisors will be included. For further information on these Singapore based projects please contact the listed supervisors within the project outlines.

Research Themes & Projects

These are based on the following Research Themes:

  • Ageing and Digital Technologies
  • Computing Science, especially Cyber Security and Visualisation
  • Sustainability, including Energy and Water
  • Electrical Power
  • Marine Science and Technology

Timetable

Projects are now available and open to applications.

Deadline for applications is the 31st January 2017 (17:00 GMT).

The outcome of your application will be announced after the 27th February 2017.

Additional guidance

A range of PhD options for your prospective school (noted on the project outline) will then be given. Please select the first option, even it does not match your exact PhD project research area.

You will then need to add your project NSS code, ie NSSXX in the ‘Studentship/Partnership Reference’ field (this information is listed next to the project title that you are applying for). It is this code that identifies the exact project you are applying for and the relevant research area in your prospective school.

You must also attach to your application a current CV, your transcripts, a two page cover letter explaining why we should select you for your chosen project, and details for two referees.

We encourage students to apply for a maximum of TWO projects. Part of the competition is rated on student ‘fit’ to project, therefore it is advised that students focus on the project and area of research where they feel they can make the most impact.

The online portal will only allow one application to a school. If you are applying for TWO projects at the same school then you will need to email the second one directly to PGAdmissions@ncl.ac.uk with all the relevant information requested and they will forward to the selector.

We particularly encourage applications from women.
