Admin Finance Internship

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Washington Regional Office for the United States of America and the Caribbean seeks interns for its Admin/Finance Unit.

Admin/Finance Unit based in Washington, DC

Position: Admin/Finance Intern

The role provides clerical assistance to the Admin/Finance Unit under the overall supervisor of the Head of the Unit to ensure that routine services and activities within the admin/finance domain are properly implemented. Subject to the nature of the task/assignment in hand, he/she will receive regular guidance from other colleagues within the unit, which also deals with programme and IT. As per specific instructions, the incumbent many require liaising with other internal or external entities, to ensure effective delivery of services and achievement of objectives. The nature of certain personnel/administrative tasks requires discretion and confidentiality as per UNHCR standards and practices. The incumbent’s workload and the assignments will remain under constant scrutiny and direction of the supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in maintenance of administrative and financial records and budget monitoring systems to record and reconcile expenditures, balances, payments, statements relating to UNHCR’s projects in the U.S. and Caribbean as well as other internal data for day-to-day transactions and reports.
  • Prepares recurring reports as scheduled and special reports as required for budget preparation and audits. Assists in requisitions of office supplies and equipment locally and abroad and arranges for control of distribution and maintenance of appropriate inventory needs.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

While not being a formal requirement, any relevant experience will be taken into account in the selection of interns. Candidates should furthermore demonstrate the following skills:

  • Analytical and drafting skills;
  • Good oral communication skills;
  • Knowledge of UNHCR’s Mandate;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as within a team;
  • Good time management skills;
  • Good level of computer proficiency. Familiarity with electronic databases preferred and proficiency with Microsoft Excel required.
  • Fluency in English required. Fluency in a second language, such as Spanish, French or Arabic preferred.

Intern Expectations

Interns will participate in a range of activities within the Admin/Finance Unit, and will become familiar with the daily task of Admin/Finance and Programme related matters in a large humanitarian organization. The overarching objectives of the internship – from the perspective of the intern – are (i) to gain a deeper knowledge of the work of UNHCR, as well as of the frameworks governing the organization’s interventions, rules and regulation and (ii) to practice and develop analysis skills and other professional working skills, such as project and time management, prioritization, team work, presentation skills, etc. The work of the interns is not confined to a single project as may be the case in other internships, since interns are involved in all aspects of our work. The engagement also includes some elements of routine (e.g. filling).

3-5 month internships (Fall, Spring or Summer terms); 6 month internships (January-June and July-December)

Unfortunately UNHCR is not in a position to pay interns and to provide scholarships, living or moving stipends.
