Now in its fifth year, the fund provides annual financial grants to academics and professional staff from Australia and overseas who work in international education.

Grants are available in the following categories:

  • Professional development
  • Research project in international education
  • Doctoral studies in international education

The fund was established in honour of Professor Tony Adams. Tony was a revered leader and highly-regarded mentor to many people working in the international education industry. He was also IEAA’s Foundation President.

Grant types

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTUp to 2 x AUD 2,000
These grants are open to academic, professional and/or administrative staff working in the field of international education who wish to pursue further professional development in internationalisation of education.
RESEARCH PROJECT IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION1 x AUD 3,000
This grant is available to those undertaking a research project in internationalisation of education. It provides funding up to AUD 3,000 for a one-off research project.
DOCTORAL STUDIES IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION1 x AUD 1,500 (for up to 3 years)
This grant is available to those undertaking a doctoral studies in internationalisation of education. It provides AUD 1,500 funding for each year of a doctoral study (up to 3 years).

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  1. Eligible applicants must be:
    1.1 Academic or administrative staff working in the field of international education who wish to pursue further professional development in internationalisation of education, or research or doctoral studies in internationalisation of education.
  2. The suitability of the proposed activity to be undertaken.
    2.1. Is the activity focussed either on staff professional development, research or some aspect of formally accredited doctoral study focussed on an aspect of international education?
    2.2. Are costs able to be verified / confirmed?
    2.3. Are costs summarised in a detailed budget of proposed expenditure?
  3. The intended short-term and long-term outcomes for the recipient:
    3.1. How clear is the applicant about what he/she will achieve or gain through involvement in this activity in the short and long term?
    3.2. Is the activity described likely to lead to these outcomes?
    3.3. To what extent will the award make a difference to the applicant’s life?
  4. The potential benefit to others in international education and/or the advancement of one or more aspects of international education:
    4.1. How clear is the applicant about how involvement in this activity will benefit others and/or advance international education?
    4.2. Is the activity described likely to lead to benefits for others as well as the recipient?
    4.3. To what extent will the award make a difference to others and/or one or more aspects of international education?

Applicants who have commenced or completed professional development or research activity are ineligible for this funding. Only new proposed activities will be considered.

Successful applicants will score positively on all criteria. The amount of each grant and the number of grants per year is decided by the Fund Advisory Committee. Decisions by the Committee are final and not open to appeal.

Successful applicants are required on the completion of the activity to provide a report or a paper with the findings and lessons from the activity.

The applicant's statement (maximum 500 words) should outline:

  1. The activity to be undertaken, including total cost, amount sought and how the grant will be spent
  2. The intended short-term and long-term outcomes
    (i.e. how will the award make a difference to the recipient?)
  3. How this grant might benefit others and/or contribute to the advancement of international education (i.e. how will the award make a difference in international education?)

Applicants are also required to provide a short bio (maximum 300 words).

Supporting documentation

  • Professional development
    • Applications must provide a letter of acceptance from the entity delivering the program/opportunity.
  • Research grants
    • ​Research project applications must include a general research outline and an endorsement letter from the entity that supports or supervises the research.
    • Doctoral studies grant applicants must include a doctoral studies proposal and a letter of acceptance from the supervisor/research centre.
