The International Citizen Media Award 2017

Publish Date: Dec 16, 2016

Deadline: Feb 28, 2017

The Award

The International Citizen Media Award 2017 intends to honor tremendous international work in the field of citizen media and its products in the categories Video and Audio which have been created by private, non-commercial producers.

The award distinguishes the dedication of citizens of all countries, their audiovisual products and their reporting concerning locally, regionally, globally and socially relevant topics.

Topic of the Award

Cultural Heritage – The memory of our past, the key to our future

Europe’s cities and landscapes are marked by physical memories of the past. Castles, bridges and archaeological wonders are some of the most quintessential examples. Traditions, languages and art passed through the generations of people shape our everyday lives. Because cultural heritage is so central to Europe’s identity and due to the grave threats it faces in conflict zones, the European Commission considers that the time is right to celebrate cultural heritage in 2018 and to declare that year to be the “European Year of Cultural Heritage”. The aim of this year is to together share our common cultural heritage and its potential for identification, participation and development. Three aspects shall be discussed in this context in particular: cultural diversity, demographic change and sustainability. Thereby the “European Year of Cultural Heritage” in particular will build on the fact that our common cultural heritage is always both: local and European as well as memory of our past and key to our future.

The topic of next year’s Citizen Media Award was chosen parallel to the slogan of the then just mentioned upcoming year. Citizen media make people from all over the world more sensitive for a global association and an active engagement. With the announcement and choice of topic the supporters and sponsors of the Award want to inspire citizens to produce and broadcast TV and radio products concerning the topic “Cultural Heritage”.

Thereby, the focus is on the topic, the quality of the medial implementation, the authenticity, the pertinence of research and the originality. The characteristics of the productions get adequate consideration by the jury.

In addition to that, the products can be used for academic research, trainings, etc. and can be repeatedly shown and used in clips.
The producer has to take care for that he owns all rights of his product before and that the product does not harm other persons’ rights. The producer has to feel obliged to free the supporters from damages which can result of the dissemination of the products.

The supporters bear no costs in these cases. In addition to that the supporters have the option to not assign prizes in single categories or just singular complimentary prizes in concerned categories, if the participation numbers are too humble.
